Government Approves Import of LNG, Fertiliser, and Sugar Worth Over Tk1,200 Crore to Meet Rising Domestic Demand

Government Approves Import

On 6 August, the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase approved several key procurement proposals to meet domestic demand. These include the import of one LNG cargo, 70,000 tonnes of fertiliser, and 25,000 tonnes of refined sugar. The total cost for these procurements is several hundred crores of taka, with LNG costing approximately Tk517.19 crore and fertiliser and sugar purchases also amounting to significant expenditures. The meeting was chaired by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.

The 30th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Government Purchase was held today at the Cabinet Division Conference Room of the Secretariat, chaired by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed. Several significant procurement proposals were approved during the session to address growing domestic demand for energy, agricultural inputs, and essential commodities.

LNG Procurement

The Energy and Mineral Resources Division received approval to procure one cargo of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the spot market through the international quotation method. The selected supplier is M/S Aramco Trading Singapore Pte Ltd, Singapore.

  • Estimated cost: Tk517.19 crore
  • Price per MMBtu: $12.289

Fertiliser Procurement

Under two separate proposals submitted by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Industries, approvals were given for importing 70,000 tonnes of fertiliser to ensure uninterrupted agricultural productivity.

  1. DAP Fertiliser:

    • Quantity: 40,000 tonnes

    • Supplier: MA’ADEN, Saudi Arabia

    • Agency: Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC)

    • Cost: Tk383.62 crore

    • Price per tonne: $781

  2. Granular Urea Fertiliser:

    • Quantity: 30,000 tonnes (bagged)

    • Supplier: KAFCO, Bangladesh

    • Agency: Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC)

    • Cost: Tk164.91 crore

    • Price per tonne: $448.37

Sugar Import

To stabilise the domestic market and ensure sufficient stock, the Ministry of Commerce also obtained approval for the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) to import 25,000 tonnes of refined sugar through the international open tender method.

  • Cost: Tk175.98 crore
  • Price per kg: Tk106.66
