Traffic Congestion in Dhaka May Ease Soon: Home Minister
Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said that Dhaka Traffic will be reduced significantly if short-term plans are implemented by April. He made this statement on Tuesday (24 March) after a meeting at the Secretariat titled
“Reducing Traffic Congestion in Dhaka and Modernising Traffic Management.”
Meeting Chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and was attended by representatives from multiple key institutions, including:
- Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)
- Both city corporations
- Ministry of Home Affairs
- RAJUK
- BUET experts
- Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA)
The meeting focused on short-term, mid-term, and long-term plans to improve Dhaka Traffic.
Short-Term Measures to Be Implemented by April
The Home Minister said that several important decisions were discussed in the meeting, and the short-term steps that can be taken quickly will be announced later in the form of official resolutions.
He Said,
“স্বল্পমেয়াদি পরিকল্পনাগুলো আগামী এপ্রিল মাসের মধ্যে বাস্তবায়ন করা হলে রাজধানী ঢাকার যানজট সমস্যার অনেকটাই নিরসন হবে।”
Translation: “If the short-term plans are implemented within April, Dhaka’s traffic congestion will be reduced significantly.”
Automation of Traffic Signals Using Local Technology
Salahuddin Ahmed also said that as part of long-term improvements, traffic signals in Dhaka are being automated using fully local technology. Currently, seven intersections are already operating under the automated system. The government plans to introduce automation in six more intersections next week.
Plan to Bring 120 Traffic Signals Under Automation
The minister added that, in phases, nearly 120 traffic signals across Dhaka will be brought under an automated system. This is expected to bring major improvements in traffic control and reduce congestion across the city.
