Government Launches ‘Mahrin Chowdhury Award’ to Honour Brave Teachers

The government has announced a new award named after the late teacher Mahrin Chowdhury, who died while trying to save students during a tragic plane crash at Milestone School and College. The ‘Mahrin Chowdhury Award’ will be given to teachers for showing courage and dedication. Her heroic act will always be remembered.

Award Announced in Honour of a Brave Teacher

On August 7, 2025, the Interim Government’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam announced that the government will introduce a special award for teachers named ‘Mahrin Chowdhury Award’. This award is being created to honour the courage of Mahrin Chowdhury, who sacrificed her life while trying to save students during a tragic incident at Uttara’s Milestone School and College.

“মাহরিন চৌধুরী স্কুলের শিক্ষার্থীদের উদ্ধারে আত্মদান করেছেন। তিনি যে সাহসিকতা দেখিয়েছেন তা স্মরণীয় হয়ে থাকবে। তাই তার সাহসিকতার জন্য শিক্ষকদের জন্য ‘মাহরিন চৌধুরী অ্যাওয়ার্ড’ চালু করছে সরকার।”
“Mahrin Chowdhury sacrificed her life to rescue school students. The bravery she showed will always be remembered. That’s why the government is introducing the ‘Mahrin Chowdhury Award’ for teachers.”

The Plane Crash That Took Her Life

On July 21, 2025, a small aircraft tragically crashed at Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka. Among those who died was Mahrin Chowdhury, the coordinator of the Bangla medium section of the school. She was trying to help evacuate students during the disaster. So far, 34 people, including children, have died, and many others are still in the hospital with severe burns.

Mahrin Chowdhury’s Background

Mahrin Chowdhury was originally from Bagulagari Chowdhury Para, Jal Dhaka Upazila, Nilphamari. She was the eldest daughter of Mohitur Rahman Chowdhury and Sabera Khatun.

After completing her education, she joined Milestone School and College in Uttara as a teacher in 2002-2003. She served as the coordinator for classes 3 to 5 in the Bangla medium section until her death.

Family and Legacy

Mahrin was married and lived in Charatrai village, Naria Upazila, Shariatpur district, which is her in-laws’ home. Her husband, Monsur Helal, works as a general manager in a private company. Together, they had two sons – Ayan Rashid and Adel Rashid.

Mahrin Chowdhury also comes from a prominent political family. She was the niece of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) founder, late President Ziaur Rahman. Ziaur Rahman’s mother Jahanara Begum and Mahrin’s grandmother Rowshanara Begum were sisters.
