Government Warns Media: No Broadcast of Sheikh Hasina’s Statements

Government Warns Media

The government of Bangladesh has strictly warned that any broadcast of statements or audio messages from Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina on television, newspapers, or online platforms will result in immediate legal action. Authorities stated that Sheikh Hasina, accused of crimes against humanity and convicted in cases, is a fugitive. Therefore, broadcasting her statements violates existing laws, including the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009. The government emphasized that such actions could incite violence and disrupt national stability. Media houses have been urged to act responsibly, while the interim government under Professor Muhammad Yunus continues its efforts toward justice and free elections.

Sheikh Hasina Declared Fugitive and Convicted Offender

On Friday (22 August), the government issued an official statement warning all television channels, newspapers, and online media that any broadcast of speeches or audio messages by Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina will invite immediate legal consequences.
The statement described Sheikh Hasina as a convicted criminal and a fugitive accused of crimes against humanity. Broadcasting her remarks is therefore a serious violation of existing laws, including the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009.

Reference to Tribunal’s Previous Prohibition

The statement further recalled that in December last year, the International Crimes Tribunal had already prohibited the broadcast of speeches containing hate and incitement. Despite this, on Thursday, some media outlets defied the law and court orders by airing Sheikh Hasina’s statement, which reportedly contained “false and provocative information.”

Strict Action Against Media Outlets

The government has termed such broadcasting as a criminal offense and warned that strict measures will be taken against responsible media officials. It also alleged that Sheikh Hasina had fled the country after being accused of ordering mass killings of hundreds of peaceful protesters during the July uprising. Currently, she remains under trial in the International Crimes Tribunal.

Awami League’s Activities Declared Illegal

The statement emphasized that since the activities of the Awami League are legally prohibited, any promotion of its leaders’ activities or speeches is also punishable. The government cautioned that Sheikh Hasina’s speeches may destabilize the nation and fuel violence, urging journalists and media organizations to maintain responsibility.

Interim Government’s Position

Concluding the statement, the government highlighted that under the leadership of Professor Muhammad Yunus, the interim administration is working toward justice, accountability, and democratic integrity, with the goal of ensuring a free and fair election in Bangladesh.
