In a major push to enhance tourism and infrastructure in the coastal district, the Bangladesh government has given in-principle approval for a cable car project connecting Himchori to Reju Khal along the scenic Marine Drive Road in Cox’s Bazar. The project will be implemented under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

The decision came during the 16th meeting of the Advisers Council Committee on Economic Affairs, held today at the Bangladesh Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed.

The proposal was presented by the Cox’s Bazar Development Authority (CoxDA), operating under the Ministry of Housing and Public Works. The initiative is seen as a milestone in the government’s broader vision to transform Cox’s Bazar into a global tourist destination and smart city.

Once completed, the cable car system is expected to offer breathtaking aerial views of the Bay of Bengal and the surrounding hills, making it a unique attraction for both domestic and international tourists. It will also ease access to key natural sites, reduce traffic congestion, and promote environmentally sustainable tourism in the region.

The government’s emphasis on PPP for this project highlights its commitment to involving the private sector in long-term national development, especially in tourism and infrastructure. This project is part of a series of strategic initiatives aimed at turning Cox’s Bazar into a world-class tourism hub, in line with the government’s 20-year master plan for the district.
