The Bangladesh interim government has boosted its food subsidy program by 12% which now totals BDT 8,100 crore. The government’s recent action expands food distribution while offering financial support to low-income households which face challenges because of high food prices. The present food stocks total 15.12 lakh tonnes yet Bangladesh struggles to procure food because adverse weather conditions have led to agricultural losses.
The expansion of Open Market Sales (OMS) and Food Friendly Programme (FFP) has countered the reduced funding for several other relief programs which pose safety risks to vulnerable communities. The finance ministry has already proposed measures to tackle food security, including lowering tariffs on food imports, ensuring farmers get fair prices, and enhancing supply chains. These actions seek to address immediate challenges and create long-term solutions to make food more accessible and affordable for everyone.
