Hasina’s Commando Forces Ready to Protect Mujib’s Shrine

Hasina's Commando Forces Ready to Protect Mujib's Shrine

According to the Indian news channel, TheWell, forces of NCP-Jamaat-Chhatra Shibir may attack the shrine. The Awami League has warned leaders and workers of all neighboring districts including Gopalganj about this.

The political scene in Bangladesh is once again in a state of flux. The National Citizens Party (NCP), formed by former anti-discrimination student leaders, has returned to the scene with nationwide processions and meetings on the anniversary of the July-August Movement. The party’s movement features the active presence of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Chhatra Shibir.

At such a time, the Bangladesh Awami League has expressed security concerns surrounding the shrine of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in Tungipara, Gopalganj. The party fears that cadres of NCP-Jamaat-Chhatra Shibir may attack the shrine. A warning message has already been circulated through various channels, including WhatsApp groups, to Awami League leaders and workers in Gopalganj and surrounding districts.

The Awami League has said that it has made counter-preparations to repel any such attack. The Awami League’s armed cadres, known as the Mujib Bahini, have been kept ready to mount a swift resistance in any situation.

An Awami League leader said,

Not only in Gopalganj, but in Tungipara and surrounding districts, the armed forces of NCP-Jamaat-Shibir-BNP have taken shelter in the houses of various people. They will try to destroy Mujib’s shrine at the opportunity. Just like the house in Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka was demolished. To prevent a repeat of that incident, the army and police are keeping a close watch on the shrine in Tungipara, as well as the Awami League cadres. Not only in Gopalganj, many surrounding districts are still free zones of the Awami League. There are armed cadres of the party in every neighborhood. If there is an attack, there will be mass resistance. On the day of the August 5 mass uprising last year, the local people surrounded the military. They forced the army to be active in stopping the terrorism of the Jamaat-BNP.

The party has announced that the Awami League leadership will contact the army and police on Monday and Tuesday to request them to ensure maximum alertness in the area of Bangabandhu’s shrine. In the meantime, local cadres of the Awami League are also on active surveillance in the area of the shrine along with the security forces.

The party said, citing reliable sources, that armed cadres of NCP, Jamaat, Shibir and BNP are taking shelter in the houses of various local people in Gopalganj, Tungipara and surrounding districts. According to the plan, they may try to attack Bangabandhu’s shrine by seizing the opportunity – just as house number 32 in Dhanmondi in Dhaka was vandalized once.

In a secret message, the Awami League said that the NCP is going to organize a southern-based road meeting in Gopalganj on July 16. According to reliable information, NCP leaders and activists are planning to enter Gopalganj by foot. This operation will be led by Tarek Sayed, son of Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedi, who is accused of war crimes.

Since the organizational base of Jamaat and NCP in Gopalganj is weak, they are planning to show strength by bringing manpower from Barisal and Pirojpur. The Awami League has identified this situation as very worrying.

In the current situation, the Ministry of Home Affairs has already decided to conduct a nationwide combing operation. In particular, initiatives have been taken to depopulate Gopalganj district to reduce the risk of sabotage.

The Awami League has told party leaders and workers in a secret message that the burial place of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is Tungipara, Gopalganj. It is not just a shrine, it is a symbol of the soul of the Bengali nation. But it is being informed with great concern that the National Citizens Party (NCP) and Jamaat-e-Islami-backed clique are planning to sabotage the area of Bangabandhu’s shrine on July 16, 2025,

The message further said that reliable sources have informed that on the occasion of the NCP southern road meeting, they will enter through Patgati in Gopalganj on that day. Tarek Sayed, son of war criminal Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedi, will lead this operation. Due to the organizational weakness of NCP and Jamaat in Gopalganj district, they are planning to bring people from Barisal and Pirojpur to gather manpower.

The party has been called upon to take the following initiatives to thwart this conspiracy:

  • Ensure maximum vigilance and permanent presence of security forces in Tungipara.
  • Develop a mass resistance involving the public with the participation of local Awami League and allied organizations.
  • Prepare to thwart any conspiracy by uniting all party workers.
