Even after a major political change, a government primary school in Pirojpur still has a photo of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on its office wall. While most institutions removed such photos, the headteacher of this school stands firm, saying she will not remove it because of her father’s legacy as a freedom fighter. This has sparked political tension in the area, with local BNP leaders calling it biased. However, the education office says there is no official order to remove Bangabandhu’s image.
Photo Still Hanging at Government School Despite Change in Power
After the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August, most government and private offices in Nesarabad upazila removed photos of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina. But one school stood out—Sonarghop Ramesh Chandra Government Primary School in Pirojpur. In the office room of this school, Bangabandhu’s picture is still hanging.
This has created political tension in the area.

Headteacher Takes a Stand: ‘My Father Was a Freedom Fighter’
Shamima Yasmin, the headteacher of the school, said she would not take the photo down and said, “My father was a freedom fighter.”
“আমার বাবা মইনুদ্দিন মাস্টার একজন বীর মুক্তিযুদ্ধা। আমি ছবি নামাবো না। কেউ যদি অপসারণ করে সেটা তাদের ব্যাপার। আমরা বঙ্গবন্ধুকে হৃদয়ের ধারণ করি ও ভালোবাসি। তার অপমান কখনোই চাইবো না।”
“My father Moinuddin Master was a freedom fighter. I won’t take the photo down. If anyone else removes it, that’s their choice. We hold Bangabandhu in our hearts and love him. We would never want to insult him.”
BNP Leaders Claim Political Bias
Local BNP leaders have criticized the headteacher’s action. They argue that public institutions should remain neutral.
“১৭ বছর ফ্যাসিস্ট শেখ হাসিনা সরকারি-বেসরকারি শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানে এককভাবে বঙ্গবন্ধু ও হাসিনার ছবি টানিয়ে রেখেছে। বাংলাদেশ স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামে অন্য কোনো রাজনৈতিক দলের অস্তিত্ব রক্ষা করেনি। আমরা এর বিরোধিতা করি।”
“For 17 years, fascist Sheikh Hasina forced only the photos of Bangabandhu and Hasina in educational institutions. No other political party could survive in the liberation war. We protest this.”

Assistant Teacher Also Raised Concern
An assistant teacher at the same school, Md. Rezaul Kabir, said that although he respects the headteacher’s position, the other government teachers had asked her several times to remove the photo, but she did not listen and said, her Father Was a Freedom Fighter.
“পদাধিকার বলে আমি ওই স্কুলের সহকারী শিক্ষক। প্রধান শিক্ষক যদি বঙ্গবন্ধুর ছবি না সরায় আমরা কি করতে পারি। তবুও আমাদের স্কুলের সরকারি শিক্ষকরা একাধিকবার ছবি সরানোর কথা বলেছিলাম তিনি তা শোনেননি।”
“I am an assistant teacher at the school. If the headteacher doesn’t remove the photo, what can we do? Still, we government teachers asked her multiple times to take it down, but she didn’t listen.”
Education Office Clears the Rules
Md. Gias Uddin, Upazila Education Officer of Nesarabad, said that government rules still make it mandatory to keep Bangabandhu’s picture in educational institutions.
“সরকারি নির্দেশনা অনুযায়ী বঙ্গবন্ধুর ছবি সরকারি অফিস ও শিক্ষা প্রতিষ্ঠানগুলোতে টানানো বাধ্যতামূলক। ছবি সরানোর কোনো প্রজ্ঞাপন নেই। যদি কেউ এ নিয়ে অসন্তুষ্ট হন, তাহলে যথাযথ প্রশাসনিক প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে আপত্তি জানাতে পারেন।”
“According to government instructions, it is mandatory to display Bangabandhu’s photo in government offices and schools. There is no official order to remove it. If anyone is unhappy, they can raise objections through proper administrative channels.”
