Hero Alom, the controversial public figure who rose from being a cable TV businessman in Bogura to a social media sensation, has now announced his plans to contest for the position of Mayor in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).

In an interview on Wednesday (30 July) with Jago News, Hero Alom said he is preparing to run as an independent candidate.

Translation: “I will contest the mayoral election of Dhaka South City as an independent candidate. I am preparing for it. I’m talking and engaging with the people of the area. I will make an official announcement when the time is right.”

Ishraque Hossain: A Tough Opponent?

Hero Alom’s major competitor in this race could be BNP-backed Ishraque Hossain, who is already in the spotlight as a potential mayoral candidate.

When asked about the challenge of going up against Ishraque, Hero Alom responded confidently:

Translation: “No election is easy. I’m doing my work in my own way. But everything depends on the people. If they want, I will even participate in national elections.”

Hero Alom’s Political Background

Hero Alom has contested in multiple elections before. In the Dhaka-17 by-election on 23 July 2023, he ran as an independent candidate with the Ektara (single-stringed instrument) symbol. On election day, he was attacked and later filed a written complaint to the Election Commission demanding the vote be canceled.

Additionally, he also contested in the by-elections of Bogura-4 (Kahaloo-Nandigram) and Bogura-6 (Sadar) on 1 February 2023. In both cases, he was defeated by Awami League-backed candidates.

In Bogura-4, AKM Rezaul Karim Tansen won by only 834 votes, while in Bogura-6, Raquebul Ahsan, General Secretary of Bogura District Awami League, came out victorious.

“I Want to Work for the People” – Hero Alom

Translation: “Many people are calling and encouraging me. Discussions are ongoing. I just want a chance to work for the people.”
