High Court’s Directive on Metro Rail Safety

The High Court has directed the formation of an expert committee to review the overall safety measures and accident issues related to the metro rail. The committee has been ordered to submit a detailed report within 30 days.

The order came from the High Court bench of Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Asif Hasan on Wednesday (October 29) after a preliminary hearing on a public interest writ petition.

Rule Issued for Compensation

Along with the directive, the court also issued a rule asking authorities to explain why the family of the deceased, Abul Kalam Azad, should not receive Tk 2 crore in compensation.

Background of the Incident

The writ petition was filed by Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun on Monday.

The incident occurred last Sunday in Farmgate, Dhaka, when a bearing pad fell from a metro rail pillar, tragically killing Abul Kalam Azad, a passerby.

After the accident, authorities announced Tk 5 lakh in compensation for the victim’s family.

This was not the first such incident — a similar case of a bearing pad falling from the metro rail had happened last year as well.
