Azmeri Haque Badhon is not just an actress, she is a conscious individual, a fighter who shared her story of struggle and transformation in a voice that was both simple and sincere. This interview was unlike the usual celebrity statements. It was, instead, a testament to the inner and outer courage of a woman.
On Facebook, she wrote: “How tragically a historic opportunity has been wasted! I dreamed of a just and good nation one built on honesty and hope. But that dream is now shattered into pieces.”
“We had hope when we joined the July movement. There was excitement, a desire for change. But now, all that hope is crushed. I truly believed change was possible. I’ve always been an optimistic person. I thought the beginning of change was finally here. But even that beginning never happened.
I also didn’t expect this current government to do everything. I believed they would at least build a foundation so the next elected government could move things forward. But to me, it now feels like this government is headed toward failure.”
ফেসবুকে লিখেছেন, ‘কী মর্মান্তিকভাবে নষ্ট হলো এক ঐতিহাসিক সুযোগ! আমি স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলাম একটি ভালো, ন্যায়ের ওপর গড়া দেশ, যেখানে থাকবে সততা, থাকবে আশার আলো। কিন্তু সেই স্বপ্ন এখন চূর্ণবিচূর্ণ।’
আমরা যখন জুলাই আন্দোলনে অংশ নিয়েছি, তখন একটা আশা ছিল মনে, একটা উত্তেজনা ছিল, একটা পরিবর্তনের ইচ্ছা ছিল। এখন সেই আশা চূর্ণবিচূর্ণ। আমি বিশ্বাস করেছিলাম, পরিবর্তন সম্ভব। আমি খুবই ইতিবাচক একজন মানুষ। আমার মনে হয়েছিল যে পরিবর্তনটা বুঝি শুরু হবে। কিন্তু শুরুটাও হলো না। আমি এটাও মনে করেছিলাম, এই সরকারও সব করবে না। একটা নির্বাচিত সরকার করবে। একটা কাঠামো তৈরি করে দিয়ে যাবে, এরপর যে সরকার আসবে, তার কাজটা যাতে আরেকটু বেগবান হয়। কিন্তু আমার কাছে মনে হচ্ছে এই সরকার ব্যর্থতার দিকে চলে যাচ্ছে।
You seem to suggest the system hasn’t changed at all. What do you think keeps it alive?
Corruption. That’s the root of everything. We are a deeply corrupt nation. That hasn’t changed. Yes, autocracy may be gone, but the system remains. Take the Advisory Council they’re all good people. But despite their efforts, the system hasn’t been fixed. So after all this time, if they couldn’t change the system, they must take responsibility for that failure. The current government cannot avoid this accountability.
আপনার কথায় মনে হচ্ছে, ব্যবস্থার কোনো বদল হয়নি। এই ব্যবস্থা টিকে থাকার মূল কারণ কী?
একমাত্র কারণ দুর্নীতি। আমরা আগাগোড়া দুর্নীতিগ্রস্ত জাতি। আমাদের এই দুর্নীতি এখনো যায়নি। স্বৈরাচার চলে গেছে ঠিক, সিস্টেম তো রয়ে গেছে। আমি উপদেষ্টা পরিষদের কথা বলতে চাই, তারা প্রত্যেকে ভালো মানুষ। কিন্তু তাদের চেষ্টা বাস্তবায়ন করা যাচ্ছে না। কিন্তু তারা এতটা সময় থাকার পরও যেহেতু সিস্টেম ঠিক করতে পারল না, এটার দায় তাদের নিতেই হবে। এই দায়ভার এড়ানোর কোনো সুযোগ বর্তমান সরকারের নেই।
What have you done personally to fight this situation?
There’s not much I can do. I did what I could by supporting the July movement. Now, all I can do is voice my concern and anxiety. What else can I do? Many have told me to enter politics, that I should get involved. But I’ve said—never. I will never join any political party in my lifetime. Still, as a conscious citizen of this country, I will speak out. I will demand my rights and freedom. I will continue to protest injustice whenever and however I can.

আপনি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে এ অবস্থার বিরুদ্ধে কী করেছেন?
আমার কিছুই করার নেই। যতটুকু করার ক্ষমতা ছিল, জুলাই আন্দোলনে ওদের সাপোর্ট করে করেছি। এখন যা করার আছে, আমার উদ্বেগ, উৎকণ্ঠার কথ্য জানাচ্ছি। এ ছাড়া আমি আর কী করতে পারব? আমাকে অনেকে বলছে, তুমি রাজনীতিতে যোগ দাও, তোমার রাজনীতিতে যোগ দেওয়া উচিত। আমি বললাম, কোনো দিন রাজনীতি করব না। আমার এই জীবনে কোনো দিন কোনো রাজনৈতিক দলে যোগ দেব না। কিন্তু রাষ্ট্রের একজন সচেতন নাগরিক হিসেবে কথা বলে যাব, অধিকার চেয়ে যাব, স্বাধীনতা চেয়ে যাব; যত অন্যায় হবে, সেটার প্রতিবাদ করার চেষ্ট। করে যাব।
What do you wish for now?
I just keep saying what I want. I want a country built on equality. I want a nation of peace. I don’t know when that wish will come true, but I’ll keep wishing. I’ll keep speaking from where I stand. I have a daughter, and I want to raise her as a good human being.
আপনার চাওয়া কী?
আমি যা চাই, বলতে থাকি। আমি একটা সাম্যের দেশ। চাই। শান্তির দেশ চাই। সেই চাওয়া কবে পূরণ হবে, জানি না। তবে আমি চেয়েই যাব। আমি শুধু বলে যাব, আমার জায়গা থেকে যতটুকু সম্ভব। আমার মেয়েসন্তান আছে, তাকে ভালো মানুষ হিসেবে গড়ে তোলার চেষ্টা করব।
