“If BNP comes to power, Nijhum Dwip will become the Maldives of Bangladesh: BNP’s Mahbuber Rahman Shamim

"If BNP comes to power, Nijhum Dwip will become the Maldives of Bangladesh"

BNP’s Organizing Secretary Mahbuber Rahman Shamim has said that despite the fallen autocratic regime being in power for a long time, no development has taken place in Nijhum Dwip.

Development of Nijhum Dwip BNP’s vision into a major tourism hub reflects their plan to boost the southern economy. Successful implementation depends on political stability, funding, strategic planning, and good governance. What they have done instead is land grabbing, looting, extortion, and terrorist activities.

“I am truly amazed by the beauty of Nijhum Dwip,” he said. “I can promise that if BNP comes to power, Nijhum Dwip will be transformed into a full-fledged tourism region. People from not only Bangladesh but all over the world will come to see Nijhum Dwip. We have traveled to many places, but we haven’t seen a place like Nijhum Dwip even abroad. This island will be the ‘Maldives’ within Bangladesh.”

He made these remarks on Wednesday, June 11, while addressing a public gathering as the chief guest at Bandartila Bazaar in Nijhum Dwip Union.

Mahbuber Rahman Shamim further said, “I urge the interim government to immediately take steps to construct an embankment here. And if a BNP government is formed, a complete embankment will be built around Nijhum Dwip. It is unacceptable that people in such a beautiful place are living in such hardship. If BNP forms the government, we will improve the transportation system here. Through our initiatives, many will become self-reliant.”

He also criticized previous governments, stating, “Past governments have only enriched themselves, growing fat like banana trees overnight, but the lives of ordinary people have not changed at all.”

He added, “Let me be very clear if BNP comes to power, Nijhum Dwip will not be a sanctuary for criminals. No terrorists, extortionists, or land grabbers will be tolerated here. The primary responsibility of BNP leaders and activists is to serve the people and stand by their side. Just as you stood by them during natural disasters, you must always be with them not just during elections, but as long as Bangladesh and the nationalist party exist, you must be by the people’s side.”

Why is Nijhum Dwip Important?
Nijhum Dwip is a small island located in Hatiya Upazila of Noakhali district, situated on the edge of the Bay of Bengal. It is mainly known for its natural beauty, roaming deer, vast mangrove forests, and tranquil environment. However, due to the lack of proper government oversight, the island still hasn’t been adequately developed for tourism.

What Does It Mean to Develop It Like the Maldives?
The Maldives is a South Asian island nation that has been fully built on a tourism-based economy. It boasts luxury resorts, modern transportation, turquoise seas, and coastal amenities that attract tourists from around the globe. According to the BNP’s statement, Nijhum Dwip will be developed with similar tourism infrastructure — including:

  • Eco-tourism friendly resorts

  • Safe transportation systems (both water and air routes)

  • Opportunities to strengthen the local economy

  • Assurance of climate and environmental protection

By the way this kind of statement reflects BNP’s vision for future development. It is a promise aimed at building a tourism-based economy in the southern region of the country. However, its implementation will depend on the political climate, funding, planning, and good governance.
