Former IGP Mamun Admits to Crimes Against Humanity, Turns State Witness

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun has admitted to committing crimes against humanity during the July-August movement of 2024.

On Thursday (10 July), he confessed to his involvement before the three-member bench of International Crimes Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mojumder.

In court, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun stated:
“The allegations brought against us regarding killings and genocide during the July-August movement are true. I plead guilty. I want to testify as a state witness and present the full picture of the crimes committed during that period. I wish to assist the court in uncovering the truth.”

Following his statement, the tribunal approved his application to become a state witness.

Meanwhile, the tribunal has formally framed charges in the crimes against humanity case against former Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. With this, their trial has officially begun.

As Mamun has become a state witness, his lawyer, Zayed Bin Amzad, requested the court to ensure adequate security for the former IGP. Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tazul Islam confirmed that the tribunal would issue appropriate directives regarding his protection.
