Section 144 Imposed in Gopalganj

The local administration Section 144 is imposed to control escalating unrest. Following violent attacks by banned Awami League and Chhatra League activists on the National Citizen Party (NCP) motorcade and rally in Gopalganj on July 16.

The clashes erupted after the NCP held a rally at the municipal park, which was vandalized earlier in the day by alleged Awami League supporters.

The attackers ambushed the NCP convoy at Chourangi intersection, hurling bricks and stones and vandalizing vehicles. Police, army, and four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel responded with firing blank shots, sound grenades, and tear gas to disperse the mob and restore order.

NCP leaders condemned the attacks, with Sarjis Alam urging people to come to Gopalganj and resist the banned Awami League’s influence. NCP joint secretary Tareq Reza criticized the police and called for stronger resistance, accusing law enforcement of inaction and retreat during the violence.

The NCP’s month-long nationwide campaign, “Desh Gorte July Podojatra,” aims to promote peace and nation-building across Bangladesh but has faced violent opposition in Gopalganj.
