A tragic incident shook the Islamic University (IU) campus on Thursday evening (July 17), as the floating body of a student, Sajid Abdullah, was recovered from the pond in front of Shah Azizur Rahman Hall.
The body was discovered around 6:30 PM after being noticed by nearby students and later retrieved by police in the presence of university authorities.
Sajid Abdullah was a third-year student of the Department of Al-Qur’an and Islamic Studies. He hailed from Tangail district. The somber discovery left the campus community stunned and mourning the untimely death.
According to campus sources, something was seen floating in the middle of the pond around 1:00 PM, but no one could confirm whether it was a human body.
As it drifted closer to the edge around 5:00 PM, students gathered in concern, and the university’s proctorial body was informed. The police arrived soon after and recovered the body.
Akmal Biswas, a shopkeeper near the pond, said, “Around 5:00 PM, when the body came closer to the shore, it became clear that it was a dead body. Police recovered it around 6:30 PM.”
Sajid’s friend, Insan, expressed deep sorrow: “I never leave him alone. We hung out until 2:00 AM last night. But today, he didn’t answer any of my calls.”
Kushtia Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mehedi Hasan stated, “We are investigating the matter thoroughly to determine the cause of death.” The body has been sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy.
