Indian Fishermen Held for Illegal Fishing in Bangladeshi Waters
The Bangladesh Navy detained an Indian fishing trawler and 14 fishermen for entering Bangladesh’s maritime territory illegally and fishing near the Fairway Buoy area of the Bay of Bengal.

According to reports, the trawler named FB Shubho Jatra was captured late Friday night (October 17) by the Navy patrol ship BNS Shaheed Akter Uddin while it was engaged in fishing inside Bangladeshi waters. The detained fishermen and the vessel were later brought to Mongla by another Navy ship, BNS Bishkhali, on Saturday evening.
Details of the Detained Fishermen
The detained fishermen have been identified as Chandra Das, Anand Das, Sadananda Das, Shekhar Das, Subhash Das, Moni Shankar Shikdar, Bipul Das, Gouranga Das, Mrityunjay Das, Gouranga Halder, Gautam Das, Bishwajit Das, Sujon Biswas, and Bijoy Das — all residents of Kakdwip, South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India.

Officials Confirm the Operation
Mongla Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Mohammad Zahidul Islam said:
“The Bangladesh Navy detained the Indian trawler ‘FB Shubho Jatra’ from the Fairway Buoy area on Friday night for illegal entry and fishing within Bangladesh waters.”
He added that the trawler contained around 10 maunds of hilsa and other fish, which were later sold at a public auction at Mongla ferry ghat. The earnings will be deposited in the government treasury.

Police Statement
Mongla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Anisur Rahman said:
“A case will be filed against the detained Indian fishermen for violating Bangladesh’s maritime boundary and looting fish resources. They will be sent to jail through Bagerhat court on Sunday morning.”
Past Incidents
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. The Bangladesh Navy previously detained two Indian trawlers on July 14 and another on August 3 this year from the same Fairway Buoy area for similar illegal activities.
