Indian Khasia Shoots 16-Year-Old Bangladeshi Teen at Border, BGB Demands Justice

A Bangladeshi teenager shot dead near the Sylhet border has been identified as 16-year-old Md Maruf Mia, son of Md Shahabuddin from Jhingabari village in Jaintapur upazila.

According to a press release from Lieutenant Colonel Hafizur Rahman, commander of the 48th Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the incident occurred on Indian soil near border pillar 1282/7-S.

At around 12:30 PM, Maruf Mia and several others entered a betel nut orchard inside Indian territory. A conflict arose with some Khasia individuals, during which a member of the Khasia community allegedly shot Maruf. His companions managed to bring him back to Bangladesh, and his family rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. Unfortunately, Maruf succumbed to his injuries around 3 PM.

Following the incident, the BGB lodged a formal protest with India’s Border Security Force (BSF). A company commander-level flag meeting was held at 4:30 PM, during which the BGB submitted a protest note, demanding swift action against the accused Indian citizen.

The tragic death of Maruf has raised serious concerns about border security and tensions between the two nations. The local community continues to grieve while authorities work to address the situation.
