Inflation in the country has been uncontrolled for a long time. The inflation in food items has been even more unbearable. Despite the abundance of rice and winter vegetables in the market, food inflation remained in double digits. Even though inflation decreased for three consecutive months from November to January, food inflation remained above 10%. In February, this rate dropped to a single digit. In February, food inflation decreased to 9.24%. Meanwhile, overall inflation in February decreased to 9.32%, which is the lowest in the past 22 months. The last time overall inflation was 9.24% was in April 2023. This information was revealed in the inflation report published by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics on Thursday.
According to updated data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, in January, the general inflation rate dropped to a single digit after four months, reaching 9.94%. In February, it further decreased to 9.32%. This means that a product or service that cost 100 taka in February 2024, would cost 109.32 taka in February 2025. Analyzing the BBS data, it is found that the overall inflation decreased significantly from month to month due to the declining food inflation. In February, food inflation dropped by 1.48 percentage points to 9.24%, compared to 10.72% in January. However, on the other hand, inflation in non-food items slightly increased in February, reaching 9.38%, up from 9.32% in January.
Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics reported in February that food inflation in urban areas stood at 9.47%, down from 10.95% in January. This means that food inflation decreased by 1.48 percentage points in one month. On the other hand, in rural areas, food inflation decreased by 1.46 percentage points to 9.15% in February, compared to 10.61% in January. In rural areas, food inflation outside of the food sector increased by 0.12 percentage points, reaching 9.85% in February, up from 9.77% in January. In urban areas, inflation outside of food also increased by 0.2 percentage points, reaching 9.27% in February, compared to 9.25% in January.
