Interim Government Expands as New Advisor Joins

Another member is expected to join the interim government’s advisory board. Human rights advocate and former Dhaka University (DU) professor of international relations C R Abrar is expected to be named the education advisor. Day by day increasing the number of its members. Relevant sources indicate that Wednesday is when he might take the oath. At the moment Professor Wahiduddin Mahmud is the advisor for planning and education. The planning ministry will be Wahiduddin Mahmud’s sole responsibility if C R Abrar assumes the position of education advisor.

The new adviser professor C R Abrar will take the oath tomorrow (Wednesday), according to a briefing given by Shafiqul Alam the Chief adviser’s press secretary on Tuesday. He taught at the University of Dhaka. He has been actively involved in a number of problems and has written a great deal in Bangladesh. He said that “We’re hoping he’ll be in charge of the Education Ministry. Tomorrow at 11 AM the oath taking ceremony is set to take place.” Sources from the transport pool claim that the Cabinet Division has given the order to have a car available on Wednesday.

On February 25, Nahid Islam resigned from his position as an advisor to the interim government. He was responsible for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting as well as the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology. Later, Mahfuz Alam was assigned to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Now, another new advisor is being appointed.

Notably, amid a student-led uprising, autocratic leader Sheikh Hasina resigned from the position of Prime Minister on August 5 last year and fled to India. On that same day, the cabinet was dissolved. On August 6 the President dissolved the 12th National Parliament. Subsequently, on August 8, the interim government was sworn in, with Nobel laureate economist Dr. Muhammad Yunus assuming the role of Chief Advisor. At that time, 16 advisors were appointed. Three of them could not take the oath that day as they were outside Dhaka and the country, but they were sworn in later. Subsequently, four more advisors joined the interim government. Most recently, on November 10 last year, three additional advisors were appointed.

On the other hand, on December 20 last year, Aviation and Tourism, as well as Land Advisor, A.F. Hasan Arif, passed away. Most recently, on February 25, Advisor Md. Nahid Islam resigned to join a new political party. Following these changes, the total number of advisors in the government, including the Chief Advisor, became 22.
