A Young Intern
Although he has just stepped into the world of medical practice with the title of “Intern,” Shirsho Shreyan has already achieved something remarkable. His initiative has saved countless poor patients from despair.
Shirsho is currently doing his internship at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH). Because of his effort, the hospital has received life-saving medicine worth Tk 170 crore from the international donor organization Direct Relief.
From now on, stroke and heart patients at RMCH will get this very expensive medicine—Alteplase—free of cost.
Why This Medicine Matters
Alteplase is considered a crucial drug for patients suffering from stroke or heart-related emergencies. In many cases, this single injection can decide between life and death.
But the medicine is extremely costly—around Tk 50,000 per vial. If a patient weighs more than 60 kg, doctors need to use two vials, which makes the treatment unaffordable for most families.
That is why many poor patients previously had no choice but to suffer helplessly. But now, thanks to Shirsho’s effort, they can access this medicine without cost.

How He Made It Possible
Shirsho’s journey started when he was still a fifth-year medical student. At that time, he joined a World Stroke Organization research team. He was the only Bangladeshi intern to work with this globally respected research project.
His dedication impressed the international team. Later, one of the officials directly emailed Shirsho to ask if RMCH could accept and use Alteplase for patients.
Without hesitation, Shirsho approached his mentor, Professor Dr. Azizul Haque Azad, from the Department of Medicine. Together, they began discussions with Direct Relief. After many rounds of talks and overcoming several challenges, an official agreement was signed.
Finally, 2,500 vials of Alteplase reached RMCH on 25 August. By 27 August, the hospital started giving it to patients free of cost. On the very first day, about 70 vials were used.
Shirsho Shreyan’s Humble Words
When interviewed on 28 August, Shirsho spoke with great humility. Despite being the key person behind this remarkable achievement, he showed no pride—only concern for patients.
He urged people not to delay when stroke symptoms appear.
Translaton: “The medicine is here; the opportunity is here. But if patients come late, it won’t work anymore. If someone notices numbness on one side of the body, a twisted face, or slurred speech, they must rush to the hospital without delay. Time is the most important lifesaver here.”
Praises from Mentors and Officials
Shirsho Shreyan’s mentor, Professor Dr. Azizul Haque Azad, expressed his pride:
Translation: “When Shirsho told me about this, I became very excited. This medicine is so expensive that many patients cannot buy it. Still, it is completely original and very effective. This is not just about bringing medicine; it is about giving helpless patients a chance to survive. We are proud of Shirsho.”
The hospital director, Brigadier General FM Shamim Ahmed, also praised him:
“This credit goes to Shirsho. Because of him, so many patients are now getting the medicine free of cost.”
He further added:
Translation: “By bringing this Tk 170 crore worth priceless medicine, Shirsho has not only helped patients but has also become an inspiration for all young doctors in the country.”
A Role Model for the Future
This story proves that it does not always take big titles to make a big difference. Shirsho’s small identity as an intern doctor turned into a huge example of humanity, compassion, and dedication.
He showed that what really matters in the medical profession is not just knowledge, but also a big heart for people in need.
