Call for Proportional Representation (PR)
At an event in Islamic University’s Birshreshtha Hamidur Rahman Auditorium on Thursday (11 September), Mufti Fayzul Karim stressed that Bangladesh needs to adopt the proportional representation (PR) system.
“আমরা সংখ্যানুপাতিক সংখ্যাগরিষ্ঠতা (পিআর) পদ্ধতির নির্বাচন দাবি করে আসছি। পিআর পদ্ধতিই বাংলাদেশের জন্য সবচেয়ে নিরাপদ ব্যবস্থা। এর মাধ্যমে ফ্যাসিস্ট তৈরি হবে না, পেশীশক্তির ব্যবহার থাকবে না, সেন্টার দখল হবে না, কালো শক্তির হাত থাকবে না। সব আদর্শের মানুষ এখানে যেতে পারবে।”
Translation: “We have been demanding elections under the proportional representation system. The PR system is the safest for Bangladesh. It will prevent the rise of fascism, the use of muscle power, the capture of centers, and the influence of black money. People of all ideologies will be able to participate under this system.”

Islamic Parties Planning Unity
Mufti Fayzul Karim also said that Islamic parties are thinking of participating in elections jointly.
“আমরা ইসলামি দলগুলো ঐক্যবদ্ধভাবে নির্বাচনের চিন্তা করছি।”
Translation: “We are thinking of contesting the elections united as Islamic parties.”
However, Fayzul Karim raised concerns about the fairness of elections under the present administration:
“বর্তমানে প্রশাসনের যে অবস্থা তাতে এই প্রশাসন কোনোভাবেই সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচন দিতে পারবে না। প্রশাসনকে ঢেলে না সাজালে প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ নির্বাচন হবে।”
Translation: “With the present condition of the administration, it cannot hold a fair election. If the administration is not restructured, the election will remain questionable.”
Remarks on Daksu Elections
The senior leader added that the recent Daksu elections reflected the downfall of leftist and pro-India groups.
“ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কেন্দ্রীয় ছাত্র সংসদ (ডাকসু) নির্বাচনে বাম ও ভারতপন্থিদের চিরতরে কবর রচিত হয়েছে। এই নির্বাচনের মাধ্যমে ইসলামপন্থিদের বিজয় হয়েছে। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে দীর্ঘদিন পর্যন্ত আমরা কোনঠাসা ছিলাম। সেখানে মুসলমানদের ঠিকমতো চলতে দেওয়া হয়নি, বুক ফুলিয়ে হাঁটতে পারেনি। সেখানে এই নির্বাচনের মাধ্যমে বামদের পতন হয়ে ইসলামপন্থিদের উত্থান হয়েছে।”
Translation: “In the Ducsu election, the leftists and pro-India groups were permanently buried. This election marked the victory of the Islamists. For a long time, we were cornered at Dhaka University. Muslims were not allowed to live freely or walk with pride. But through this election, the leftists have fallen, and the Islamists have risen.”

The comments were made during a career guideline program for freshers organized by the Islami Chhatra Andolan Bangladesh, Islamic University branch.
