Social media is in a state of panic, lawyer’s family insecure, administration investigation underway
A threatening video of Kanchan, the main accused in the much-discussed Rocky murder case in Gaibandha, has gone viral on social media. In it, he can be heard clearly saying,
‘আমি পূর্বপাড়ার কাঞ্চন। একটা মার্ডার করেছি, আরও ১০০টা মার্ডার করব।’
Translation: “I am Kanchan from Purbapara. I have committed one murder, I will commit 100 more murders.”
The 47-second video was posted on Wednesday (July 3) night by a Facebook ID called ‘Shaon Zaman’ and went viral instantly, creating widespread excitement and concern throughout Gaibandha.
The person seen in the video is Kanchan, son of Nawab Ali, a resident of Purbapara area of Gaibandha city. He is the main accused in the murder case of Ashiqur Rahman Rocky, the general secretary of Fulchhari Upazila Chhatra League, who was killed on July 11, 2021. Amid the long judicial process of this case, such a provocative video has created a new stir, which has also raised questions about the law and order situation.

Sharing the video, a lawyer from the High Court division claimed that his family has been subjected to threats and attacks by Kanchan and his associates for a long time. He said,
“পূর্বপাড়ায় তাঁদের বাড়ির সীমানাপ্রাচীর ভেঙে প্রকাশ্যে হত্যার হুমকি দেওয়া হয়। কাঞ্চন মাদক কারবারের সঙ্গেও জড়িত বলেও উল্লেখ করেন তিনি।”
Translation: “They threatened to kill him publicly by breaking the boundary wall of their house in Purbapara. He also mentioned that Kanchan is also involved in drug dealing.”
The lawyer claims that Kanchan has attacked his house with weapons multiple times. The matter has been reported to the police repeatedly, but no effective action has been taken.
A general diary (GD) was filed with the police station concerned on Wednesday night immediately after the incident. However, it is learnt that it was only recorded as a complaint.
He asked in the post,
‘এটাই কি সেই নতুন বাংলাদেশ? যেখানে হত্যা মামলার আসামি আইনজীবীর পরিবারের ওপর সন্ত্রাস চালায় আর প্রশাসন নীরব থাকে?’—এ সময় তিনি দেশবাসীর কাছে নিজের পরিবারের নিরাপত্তা নিশ্চিত করার আহ্বান জানান।’
Translation: “Is this the new Bangladesh? Where the accused in a murder case terrorizes the family of a lawyer and the administration remains silent?” At the time, he urged the countrymen to ensure the safety of their families.
Gaibandha Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahinur Islam said,
“ঘটনার পর রাতেই প্রাচীর ভাঙচুর ও হুমকির অভিযোগে মামলা হয়েছে। অভিযুক্তদের গ্রেপ্তারে অভিযান চলছে।”
Translation: “A case was filed on charges of vandalism and threats on the wall the night after the incident. A drive is underway to arrest the accused.”
Gaibandha Superintendent of Police Nishat Angela said,
“ভিডিওটি এখনো দেখিনি। তদন্ত করে দেখা হবে। পুলিশের বিরুদ্ধে ওঠা অভিযোগ প্রমাণিত হলে ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হবে।”
Translation: “I have not seen the video yet. An investigation will be conducted. If the allegations against the police are proven, action will be taken.”
