Jamaat Gains the Most
Political analyst Zahed Ur Rahman has said that Jamaat-e-Islami is the biggest beneficiary of Awami League’s absence from the political field. He added that confusion still remains about whether the restriction on Awami League will be lifted.
Zahed Ur Rahman pointed to Dr. Yunus’s remarks, saying,
“ড. ইউনূসের বক্তব্য থেকে বোঝা যায়, এইবার নির্বাচনে আওয়ামী লীগ আসতে পারবে না। কিন্তু শুধু এইবার কেন? যদি তারা মানবতাবিরোধী অপরাধে দায়ী হয়ে থাকে, তাহলে শেষদিন পর্যন্ত তাদের ক্ষমতায় ফেরার কথা নয়।”
Translation: From Dr. Yunus’s speech, it seems Awami League will not be able to join this election. But why only this time? If they are guilty of crimes against humanity, they should never return to power.
Government Holds the Key
Zahed explained that the government which imposed the restriction has the power to remove it through an executive order. If that happens, Awami League can still participate in the coming election.
He said,
“নিষেধাজ্ঞা দিয়েছে যে সরকার, তারা ইচ্ছে করলে এক্সিকিউটিভ অর্ডারেই তা তুলে নিতে পারে। সেই মুহূর্তে আওয়ামী লীগ অংশগ্রহণ করতে পারবে।”

Jamaat’s Silent Strategy
According to Zahed Ur Rahman, Jamaat-e-Islami did not make any official comment when Awami League’s ban process began. The reason, he noted, was that Western countries like the US and Europe did not openly support banning Awami League.
He explained,
“আওয়ামী লীগ নিষিদ্ধ হওয়ার প্রক্রিয়া শুরু হলে জামায়াতে ইসলামীর পক্ষ থেকে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে কোনো মন্তব্য করা হয়নি… এমনকি ড. ইউনূসও বহুবার এই বিষয়ে সরাসরি বিরোধিতা করেছিলেন।”
Translation: When Awami League’s ban process began, Jamaat did not officially comment… Even Dr. Yunus openly opposed it several times.
Possible Attempts to Block Awami League
Zahed believes that if Awami League tries to return to the field, Jamaat may try to block it directly or through a proxy.
He added,
“যদি আওয়ামী লীগের মাঠে ফিরে আসার পরিস্থিতি তৈরি হয়, তাহলে জামায়াতে ইসলামী নিজে অথবা কোনো প্রক্সির মাধ্যমে তা বাধাগ্রস্ত করার জোরালো চেষ্টা করবে।”
Translation: If a situation arises for Awami League’s return, Jamaat will strongly try to block it, either directly or through a proxy.

Not Fully Banned Yet
Although trials are ongoing, Awami League is not yet officially banned. If the government wants, it can still lift the current restrictions, making the party eligible to participate in elections.
Awami League’s Possible Election Move
Zahed concluded by saying that this is all part of a political calculation. He personally believes Awami League will not join the election under its own name this time.
“এটি একটি রাজনৈতিক ক্যালকুলেশন… অন্তত এইবার আওয়ামী লীগ স্ব স্ব নামে নির্বাচনে অংশ নেবে না। তারা হয়তো স্বতন্ত্রভাবে বা অন্য কোনো পার্টির সঙ্গে যুক্ত হয়ে চূড়ান্ত সিদ্ধান্ত নেবে।”
Translation: This is a political calculation… At least this time, Awami League will not contest under its own name. They may run independently or join with another party.
