Dr. Shafiqur Rahman Speaks at “Meet the Press” Event in Dhaka

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the Ameer (chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami, has demanded that the voting rights of over 11 million expatriate Bangladeshis be ensured before the 13th National Parliamentary Election. He made these remarks on Tuesday during a “Meet the Press” event held at a luxury hotel in Banani, Dhaka.

“Ignoring Expatriates Is Unacceptable”

Dr. Rahman criticized the government and the Election Commission for not allowing expatriates to vote. He said:

“You cannot expect a successful election by ignoring 1.1 crore (11 million) expatriates. These remittance warriors contribute heavily to the country’s economy. Denying them voting rights is a cruel joke.”

He also warned that not giving them the right to vote could lead to serious damage to the country’s economy.

“On this issue, we will not compromise. The Election Commission must take action quickly.”

Jamaat Wants Party Registration and Election Symbol Restored

Dr.
Shafiqur also demanded that Jamaat-e-Islami’s registration and party symbol be officially restored according to the court’s ruling. He urged the Election Commission to take proper steps and said:

“We believe the current Election Commission will protect the dignity of their positions. Jamaat will fully cooperate with them. But if we see any unfair treatment, we will not remain silent.”

Proposal to Hold Local Government Elections First

To test the ability and fairness of the current Election Commission, Dr. Rahman proposed that local government elections should be held before the national election.

“Let’s test their efficiency with local polls before the general election,” he said.

Fight Against Fascism Must Continue

Referring to past struggles for change, Dr. Rahman said many people have risked their lives to end fascism in the country.

“Even though the fascists are gone, fascism is still here. Its dark shadow is still over our nation.”

He emphasized that a free, fair, and acceptable election is necessary to form a just government that is accountable to the people.

Jamaat’s Role in Elections

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman reminded the public that Jamaat-e-Islami has played an important historical role in the country’s election process. He said the party is committed to ensuring democracy and fairness in future elections.
