Jamaat Compared to Zia’s BNP
Dr. Abdullah Muhammad Taher stated that Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami is now a major political party, comparable to the BNP during the era of the martyred President Ziaur Rahman.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion program organized by Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka Metropolitan South on the occasion of the historic National Revolution and Solidarity Day on Friday afternoon.
Opposition to Referendum Criticized
Dr. Taher criticized those who do not want a referendum before the national elections, saying they feared the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election results. He said,
“যারা জাতীয় নির্বাচনের আগে গণভোট চায় না, তারা ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় কেন্দ্রীয় ছাত্র সংসদ (ডাকসু) নির্বাচনে ভয় পেয়েছে। ডাকসু নির্বাচনের পরাজয়ের পর তারা জাকসু, চাকুস, রাকসু নির্বাচন বন্ধে কত শত ষড়যন্ত্র করেছে তা শিক্ষার্থীর পাশাপাশি দেশবাসীও দেখেছে।”
Translation: “Those who do not want a referendum before the national elections were scared by the DUCSU election results. After losing the DUCSU elections, they plotted to stop JUCSU, CUCSU, and RUCSU elections, which students and the public have seen.”
He added that the same groups opposing local government elections before national polls are also opposing the referendum.

Revolution and Popular Support
Dr. Abdullah Muhammad Taher highlighted the historical significance of past revolutions and the popularity of leaders like Ziaur Rahman and Golam Azam. He told,
“সিপাহি-জনতার বিপ্লব আর ছাত্র-জনতার বিপ্লব একই সূত্রে গাঁথা। সিপাহি-জনতার বিপ্লব পরবর্তী বাংলাদেশের প্রেক্ষাপটে জিয়াউর রহমান নিজের রাজনৈতিক স্বার্থে হলেও জাতীয় ঐক্যের দৃষ্টান্ত স্থাপন করেছেন। শহীদ জিয়াউর রহমান ও শহীদ গোলাম আজমের জানাজা ছিল বাংলাদেশের ইতিহাসে সবচেয়ে বড় জানাজা। এই দুটি জানাজা বলে দেয় তাদের জনপ্রিয়তার পরিধি।”
Translation: “The Sepoy-people revolution and the student-people revolution are connected. In post-revolution Bangladesh, Ziaur Rahman set an example of national unity, even for his political interest. The funerals of martyr Ziaur Rahman and martyr Golam Azam were the largest in Bangladesh’s history, showing their popularity.”
Call for Public-Sentiment Based Politics
Dr. Abdullah Muhammad Taher emphasized that today’s BNP is not the same as Ziaur Rahman’s BNP and has lost public trust. He warned that ignoring people’s sentiment could lead to the same downfall as the Awami League. Dr. Taher said,
“আপনারা না চাইলেও জনগণ চায়। জনগণের সেন্টিমেন্ট বুঝে রাজনীতি না করলে আওয়ামী লীগের মতই পরিণতি হতে পারে।”
Translation: “Even if you do not want it, the people do. If politics ignores public sentiment, the result could be like the Awami League’s downfall.”
Referendum Before National Elections
Regarding the referendum, Dr. Abdullah Muhammad Taher said there is no time to waste. He called for a referendum before national elections and suggested that the interim government complete it by November. Said:
“যতই চালাকি করে সময় নষ্ট করা হোক না কেন, আগে গণভোট, তারপর জাতীয় নির্বাচন হতে হবে। নতুবা জনগণ ঐতিহাসিক জাতীয় বিপ্লব ও সংহতি দিবসের চেতনায় আবার রাজপথে নেমে আসবে।”
Translation: “No matter how cleverly time is wasted, the referendum must come first, then the national elections. Otherwise, the people will take to the streets again in the spirit of National Revolution and Solidarity Day.”
He also recommended that the national elections be held in February, following the July Charter.
