Rumin Farhana’s main point
Rumin Farhana, BNP’s joint secretary for international affairs, spoke on a recent TV talk show about why Islami Chhatra Shibir won the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) election. She argued that the result came from Jamaat’s long-standing methods and strong organization.
She said (in Bangla):
“বিভিন্নজন কিভাবে দেখছে এই ডাকসু নির্বাচনকে। সেখানে অনেকগুলো বিষয় উঠে এসেছে। ছাত্রশিবির গত ১৫ বছর ধরে ছাত্রলীগের ভেতরে ঢুকে গিয়ে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় তাদের কর্মকাণ্ডগুলো চালু রেখেছে। ছাত্রশিবির বা জামায়াত যেটাই আপনি বলেন না কেন, তারা অনেক বেশি সুসংগঠিত এবং ক্যাডারভিত্তিক একটি সংগঠন।
Translation:
“Many people view this Ducsu election in different ways. Several issues have come up. Over the last 15 years, Chhatra Shibir has entered inside Chhatra League and kept its activities running at the university. Whether you call it Chhatra Shibir or Jamaat, they are much more organized and are a cadre-based group.”

She also said,
“ছাত্রশিবির বা জামায়াতে ইসলামীর প্রতিটি কর্মী, প্রতিটি নেতা, প্রতিটি সমর্থক, প্রতিটি সাথী—প্রত্যেকে দলের একেবারে ফোরামের বাইরে, তারা কখনোই যাবে না। কোনো রকমেই তারা ভোট দেবে না। তাদের আপনি কোনো কিছু দিয়েই আপনি তাদের ভোটকে কেটে অন্যদিকে নিতে পারবেন না।”
Translation:
“Every worker, every leader, every supporter, every companion of Chhatra Shibir or Jamaat will never leave the party’s forum. They will never vote otherwise. You cannot change their vote by giving them anything.”
Welfare politics and student support
Farhana stressed that Jamaat–Shibir use what she called “welfare politics” to win students’ trust. She pointed to concrete support programs that help students directly.
She mentioned (in bangla),
“এই যে ওয়েলফেয়ার পলিটিকস-এর কথা আমি বলছিলাম। আমি গণমাধ্যমে দেখলাম, তারা বিভিন্ন জায়গায় স্টুডেন্টদের নানাভাবে সহযোগিতা করেছে। ফর এক্সাম্পল, প্রতিটি হলে হলে তারা ওয়াটার পিউরিফায়ার দিয়েছে। তাদের ভালো ভালো কোচিং সেন্টার আছে। স্টুডেন্টদের মধ্যে যারা হয়তো ততটা আর্থিকভাবে সক্ষম নয়, সেই কোচিং সেন্টারগুলোতে তারা বিনা পয়সায় কিংবা কম পয়সায় তাদের কোচিং করিয়েছে। অর্থাৎ স্টুডেন্টদের সুখে-দুঃখে তারা আছে। একেবারে আজকে থেকে না, এটা এক বছরের প্রস্তুতি না, এটা কিন্তু জামায়াতের বহু পুরনো প্রস্তুতি।”
Translation:
“This is the welfare politics I mentioned. I have seen in the media that they have helped students in many ways across places. For example, they have provided water purifiers in many halls. They have good coaching centres. For students who are not financially strong, those coaching centers give free or low-cost coaching. In other words, they are with the students in joy and sorrow. This is not from today or one year’s preparation — it is Jamaat’s long-standing preparation.”
Secret politics becoming visible
Farhana described the victory as the open result of long-hidden political work. She also gave credit to Jamaat–Shibir’s long-term integration with students.
She said (in Bangla):
“এখন এটা তাদের গুপ্ত রাজনীতির প্রকাশ্য ফসলও বলতে পারেন। কিংবা তারা যে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে রাজনীতিটাকে ছাত্র-ছাত্রীদের সঙ্গে একাত্ম হয়ে করতে পেরেছে, এটা তাদের একটা সফলতাও আপনি বলতে পারেন।”
Translation:
“Now you can also call this the visible fruit of their secret politics. Or you can say it is a success for them because they have long been able to merge politics with students.”
A warning to political parties
Rumin Farhana warned that political methods have changed. She urged political parties to move toward welfare-style policies to win voters’ trust. She said if parties ignore this shift, they will lose in student, local, and national elections.
Rumin Farhana believes Jamaat–Shibir’s victory at Ducsu is the result of careful, long-term organizing and direct student support. She says other political parties must adapt their approach and focus more on welfare-oriented politics to remain competitive.
