Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwary allegedly secured his top police position by compiling Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s book ‘Oshomapto Attojiboni’. Documents from the Special Branch (SB) claim that Patwary, along with a large team, wrote and edited the book to gain Sheikh Hasina’s Favor. In return, they received flats and large sums of money. The Attorney General has called it an act of corruption and demanded an investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The Controversial Background of the Book
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s book ‘Oshomapto Attojiboni’ was published in 2012. In its foreword, Sheikh Hasina, the then Prime Minister, claimed the book was compiled and edited from Mujib’s handwritten notebooks.
She often quoted from the book in her speeches and told party members to learn lessons from it. The memoir highlighted key historical events like the Pakistan Movement, the Language Movement, and conspiracies by Pakistani rulers.

What the Special Branch Records Reveal
Newly surfaced documents from the Special Branch (SB) suggest a very different story. According to multiple records, the book was not directly Mujib’s words but was written and compiled by then SB Chief Javed Patwary with the help of 123 officers.
The report says Patwary wrote and compiled the book to secure Sheikh Hasina’s trust and loyalty. As a reward, in 2018, he was appointed as the IGP of Bangladesh Police.
Rewards for the Team
It is alleged that the 123-member team that worked on the book received expensive rewards. They were given luxury flats in areas like Dhanmondi, Bashundhara, and Mirpur along with Tk 1 crore each in cash.
The documents also mention that Sheikh Hasina’s advisor Salman F. Rahman directly supervised this entire process.
Reaction from the Attorney General
Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman strongly criticized the matter, calling it corruption. He said the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) must investigate it properly.
“দুর্নীতি করেছেন জাবেদ পাটোয়ারী। দুর্নীতি দমন কমিশনের (দুদক) উচিৎ এ নিয়ে অনুসন্ধান করা।”
Translation: “Javed Patwary has committed corruption. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) should investigate this.”
He also referred to the law of 1947 regarding corruption, saying that if a state official misuses power for personal or others’ benefits, it counts as a criminal offense.
“এই যে, গায়েব করে দিয়েছেন এটাও একটা অপরাধ। আপনি দুদককে ক্লু দেবেন সে সূত্র ধরে দুদক এগিয়ে যাবে।”
Translation: “The fact that documents were made to disappear is also a crime. If ACC is given this clue, it can investigate further.”
Missing Records from SB
Another shocking revelation is that related SB documents about the Unfinished Memoirs project have been removed. Officials see this as an intentional attempt to hide evidence.
Former IGP Nurul Huda also said the issue deserves a full investigation.
“যদি অ্যালিগেশন উঠে থাকে তবে অনুসন্ধান হওয়া উচিত। যেহেতু ফান্ড থেকে টাকা-পয়সা দেয়া হয়েছে।”
Translation: “If such allegations have come up, then there should be an investigation, as money was given from state funds.”
Where is Javed Patwary Now?
Attempts to contact Javed Patwary have failed as none of his phone numbers are active. A government source claimed that after being removed from his position as Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia on August 5, he was asked to return to Bangladesh. Instead, he moved to the United States.
Former police chief Chowdhury Mamun recently claimed in a testimony that the controversial 2018 “midnight election” was held under the advice of Javed Patwary.
