At Jahangirnagar University (JU), Professor Nigar Sultana, Dean of the Faculty of Business Studies, has resigned following strong protests by students.
Resignation Letter Submitted to Registrar
On Sunday afternoon (June 29), Professor Nigar Sultana submitted her resignation letter to the university’s Acting Registrar ABM Azizur Rahman.
The registrar confirmed the news and said that the letter will be sent to the Vice Chancellor’s office, where the final decision will be made.
Protests During Budget Senate Session
Earlier, during the 42nd annual Senate meeting, held to approve the 2025–26 fiscal year budget, Professor Nigar Sultana and two other teachers known to be supporters of the ruling party (Awami League) — Professor Md. Shafiq-Ur-Rahman and Professor Jugol Krishna Das — left the meeting hall after students started chanting slogans against them.
Students accused these teachers of bias and undemocratic behaviour within the university.

Students Gave 24-Hour Ultimatum
On Saturday morning (June 28), a group of students from the Business Studies faculty put up posters in front of the Dean’s office, giving a 24-hour ultimatum for her resignation.
The posters stated that Professor Nigar Sultana’s actions were against student interests and that she created an environment of favouritism and dictatorship in the faculty, acting as a close ally of the ruling political party.
They warned that if she didn’t step down within the given time, there would be a mass protest across the faculty and she would be held fully responsible.
Past Conflicts and Long-standing Anger
Students also mentioned that in July last year, during a student movement, Professor Sultana took a position against students, which sparked strong discontent.
Since then, various groups including the Democratic Student Council, Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, and other student organizations have protested multiple times against her, along with many general students.
