A spectacular view for skywatchers around sunset
This week, skywatchers are in for a celestial treat as the largest supermoon of 2025 graces the night sky. A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit.
On November 5, the moon will be just under 357,000 kilometers away, appearing about 8% larger and 16% brighter than the average full moon. In London, it will rise in the east around 15:52 GMT, creating a stunning sight as twilight deepens.

The spectacle will be enhanced by the moon illusion a psychological effect that makes the moon appear larger near the horizon. Though its size doesn’t actually change, our brains perceive it differently against earthly landmarks.
