The issue of extortion has once again become a hot topic across the country following the murder of a young man named Sohag in Dhaka.
A viral video has sparked controversy as an NCP leader is accused of extorting 7 lakh taka from a woman. Allegations of corruption and extortion continue to haunt the National Citizens’ Party.
Amid this situation, Dr. A.K.M. Wahiduzzaman, a member of the BNP’s National Executive Committee and a prominent academic, has brought allegations of extortion against a central leader of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) by posting a video on social media.
On Sunday (July 13), he shared the video on his Facebook wall. The post went viral almost immediately after it was uploaded.
The video, recorded on May 14 this year in the Bashundhara Residential Area, shows NCP central member Imamur Rashid Imon receiving 700,000 taka from a woman. In the video, the woman is heard saying, “Here’s seven lakh taka, it was supposed to be ten lakh, brother. Please try to understand the crisis.” In response to her saying she gave seven lakh, the NCP leader replies, “Have you told brother?” She replies, “Yes, I have told him.”
It is unclear who the woman was referring to as “brother” in the video.

The victim, a small entrepreneur, has alleged that she paid nearly 4.8 million (48 lakh) taka to the National Citizens’ Party over time in the hope of receiving project work. However, she claims she was never given any work or project in return.
Efforts to contact NCP central member Imamur Rashid Imon for a comment on the allegations were unsuccessful.
It is worth noting that several leaders of the National Citizens’ Party have faced accusations of extortion, corruption, and scandalous conduct involving women. Notably, party leader Gazi Salauddin Tanvir was accused of corruption involving 4 billion (400 crore) taka. He was later temporarily relieved of his duties as the party’s Joint Member Secretary.
