Local Elections will be Held Earlier if Political Parties Agree

Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan, advisor to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, said in a press briefing that local elections can be held before the national elections if consensus is established among political parties.

He made the remarks at a press conference held after the advisory council meeting at the Foreign Service Academy on Thursday (July 24) afternoon. He said,

Translation: “Whether the national parliamentary elections or local government elections will come first will be determined based on political consensus.”

The advisor also said,

Translation: From now on, local government elections will no longer be held on the symbols of political parties.

Earlier, he confirmed the matter in a Facebook post on the same day at noon. He wrote that there will no longer be party symbols in local government elections.

He further said that amendments to four related laws were approved at the advisory council meeting on Thursday (July 24) as per the proposal of the Local Government Department.
