Madinah Becomes Middle East’s Top Healthy City – Recognized by WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially recognized the holy city of Madinah as a “Healthy City” after it met 80 health and environmental standards. This recognition highlights Saudi Arabia’s efforts in improving the quality of life in its cities as part of the Vision 2030 development plan.

Madinah Recognized as a Healthy City by WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) has awarded the city of Madinah the title of a “Healthy City”. This city, which holds great religious significance as the home of Masjid an-Nabawi (the Prophet’s Mosque), achieved this status by meeting 80 required criteria.

Recognition Ceremony Held in Saudi Arabia

On Thursday, July 31, an official event was held where Saudi Health Minister Fahad Al-Jalajel handed over the certificate of recognition to Prince Salman bin Sultan, Governor of the Madinah region. The ceremony was covered by Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Governor’s Remark on the Recognition

During the event, Prince Salman bin Sultan said:

“মদিনার এই স্বীকৃতি নগর কেন্দ্রগুলোতে দেশের জনগণের জীবনযাত্রার মান উন্নয়নে নেতৃত্বের নিষ্ঠার উদাহরণ।”
(“This recognition of Madinah is an example of our leadership’s dedication to improving the quality of life in urban centers across the country.”)

He added that the transformation of Madinah is becoming a leading development model at both regional and international levels. This success is a part of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims for sustainable and high-quality urban development.

What Does It Take to Become a “Healthy City”?

To receive the WHO’s “Healthy City” label, a city must fulfill 80 different health and quality-of-life standards, including:

  • Public parks and green spaces

  • Pedestrian-friendly roads

  • Access to primary healthcare centers

  • Health education through schools

Madinah Joins Other Recognized Cities

According to SPA, Madinah is now the second-largest Healthy City in the Middle East, following Jeddah.
So far, 14 other cities in Saudi Arabia have also received WHO’s “Healthy City” title. These include:

  • Taif

  • Tabuk

  • Ad-Diriyah

  • Unaizah

  • Jalajil

  • Al-Mandaq

  • Al-Jumum

  • Riyadh Al-Khubara

  • Sharurah
