The hall premises of Noakhali University of Science and Technology (NSTU) were in uproar after female students alleged that male staff members participated in a search operation. The students were outraged after facing an embarrassing and unpleasant experience.
Students of Hazrat Bibi Khadija Hall staged a protest from 11:30 pm to 2 am on Tuesday (July 1). The incident began during a search operation conducted by the university administration to recover electric stoves and other illegal electrical items from the hall’s rooms. The students alleged that during the operation, several male staff members entered their rooms directly and searched them – which was an extremely humiliating and mentally terrifying experience for them.

A student told Prothom Alo that,
তিনি কয়েক দিন ধরে অসুস্থ। আজ বিভাগে পরীক্ষা থাকায় তিনি গ্রামের বাড়ি থেকে গতকাল হলে এসে ঘুমিয়ে পড়েন। এর মধ্যে দরজা ধাক্কানোর শব্দে তাঁর ঘুম ভাঙে। হঠাৎ এমন শব্দে তিনি আতঙ্কিত হয়ে পড়েন। দরজা খুলতেই হলের একজন পুরুষ কর্মচারী কক্ষে ঢুকে এদিক-সেদিক তল্লাশি করতে থাকেন।
Translation: She has been ill for a few days. She had an exam in the department today and came to the hall from her village home yesterday and fell asleep. She was woken up by the sound of a knock on the door. Suddenly, she was terrified by the sound. As soon as the door opened, a male employee of the hall entered the room and started searching here and there.

কক্ষে পুরুষ কর্মচারী দিয়ে তল্লাশির ঘটনায় রাত সাড়ে ১১টার দিকে ছাত্রীরা হলের নিচতলার ফটকে জড়ো হয়ে বিক্ষোভ শুরু করেন। রাত সোয়া একটার দিকে হলের প্রভোস্ট অধ্যাপক আবদুল কাইয়ুম মাসুদ, জ্যেষ্ঠ শিক্ষক অধ্যাপক শফিকুর রহমানসহ একাধিক সহকারী হল প্রভোস্ট ঘটনাস্থলে উপস্থিত হন। এরপর তাঁর ছাত্রীদের অভিযোগ শোনে এ বিষয়ে তদন্ত করে ব্যবস্থা নেওয়ার আশ্বাস দেন। এতে পরিস্থিতি শান্ত হয়। রাত আনুমানিক দুইটার দিকে ছাত্রীরা নিজেদের কক্ষে ফিরে যান।
Translation: The students gathered at the ground floor gate of the hall around 11:30 pm and started protesting against the search of the room by a male staff member. At around 1:15 am, the hall’s provost, Professor Abdul Qayyum Masud, senior teacher Professor Shafiqur Rahman and several assistant hall provosts arrived at the scene. After listening to the complaints of the students, they assured to investigate the matter and take action. This calmed the situation. The students returned to their rooms around 2 am.
When asked, Hall Provost Abdul Qayyum Masud told Prothom Alo this morning,
গতকাল বিকেল থেকে সন্ধ্যার পর পর্যন্ত ছাত্রী হলের শূন্য আসনের তালিকা তৈরি এবং রান্নার জন্য ব্যবহৃত অবৈধ বৈদ্যুতিক সামগ্রী উদ্ধারে হল প্রশাসন অভিযান চালায়। অভিযানের কারণে রাত সাড়ে আটটা পর্যন্ত হল প্রশাসনের সঙ্গে যুক্ত ব্যক্তিরা হলে অবস্থান করেছেন। তখন পর্যন্ত কোনো ছাত্রীর কাছ থেকে অভিযোগ আসেনি। রাতে ছাত্রীরা বিভিন্ন দাবি নিয়ে আন্দোলন করেছেন। তিনি আরও বলেন, ছাত্রী হলে ছাত্রীদের কক্ষে কোনো পুরুষ কর্মচারী ঢোকার সুযোগ নেই। কেউ যদি ঢুকে থাকে, অবশ্যই তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে ব্যবস্থা গ্রহণ করা হবে।
Translation: The hall administration conducted a drive from yesterday afternoon to evening to prepare a list of vacant seats in the student hall and recover illegal electrical appliances used for cooking. Due to the drive, people associated with the hall administration remained in the hall until 8:30 pm. Till then, no complaint has been received from any student. The students protested at night with various demands. He also said that no male employee is allowed to enter the rooms of the students in the student hall. If anyone has entered, action will definitely be taken against him.
