Matarbari Power Plant Runs at Just 15% Power

The long-awaited 1,200MW Matarbari thermal plant in Bangladesh ran at only 15% of its generation last month, only able to produce a paltry 185MW of electricity. Low-grade coal, poor maintenance, and lack of urgency on the part of testing and regulative monitoring have been attributed by experts for the lackluster performance.

Matarbari Power Plant Struggles as Poor Leadership Slows Progress

The plant, conceived to be at the center of stabilizing the national grid, has turned into a symbol of inefficiency instead. Industry analysts warn that unless there is strong leadership and meaningful accountability measures, megaprojects like Matarbari may keep on underperforming.

As a further source of concern are pending audit discrepancies of BDT 6,571 crore that raise further issues of financial governance and transparency within the energy sector.

Calls for quick reforms that restore public trust and guarantee that the nation’s investments on large-scale infrastructures become fruitful are on the rise.
