Medical College Student Commits Suicide Amid Academic Pressure

Medical

Sajib Baroi attended Sher-e-Bangla Medical College (SBMC) in Barishal, where he was a third-year student. He attended the college’s Microbiology Department and was a member of the 50th batch. Sajib has a reputation as a quiet, devout student.

What Happened?

On Thursday night, 22 May, Sajib attempted suicide by injecting himself with a dangerous mix of medicines. His classmates found him in a critical condition and quickly took him to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH). He was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). After fighting for his life for nearly two days, Sajib died on the afternoon of 24 May while receiving treatment.

The Suicide Note

Before taking his own life, Sajib wrote a short note. In the note, he shared how tired he felt. He wrote:

“I am tired of constantly fighting with myself. I just want some rest. Please forgive me. I couldn’t return the love you gave me.”

This note shows how much he was struggling mentally and emotionally.

Why Did Sajib Take This Step?

According to Sajib’s friends and classmates, he had been suffering from severe depression for a long time. Most of his classmates had already passed their MBBS exams and started their internships. But Sajib was still stuck in the third year.

His roommate, Suman Halder, said that Sajib often felt sick and weak because he could not handle the pressure of medical studies. He had a strong fear of attending classes and taking exams. This fear and pressure made his mental health worse.

Suman also shared that on that Thursday night, Sajib used two medicines — Clonazepam and Fluoxetine — and injected them into his veins. These are psychiatric drugs and can be dangerous if misused.

What Did the Police Say?

The Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station, Mizanur Rahman, could not be reached for any comments regarding the incident.
