The wife of Abul Kalam, who tragically lost his life after a metro rail bearing pad fell from a pillar in Dhaka’s Farmgate area, is set to receive a job at Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL).
DMTCL’s Managing Director Faruk Ahmed confirmed the development on Thursday (October 30), saying that Irene Akter Pia will be appointed as a computer operator under the company. Once she completes her honors degree, she will be promoted to an officer position, he added.

The incident occurred on Sunday (October 26) around 12 noon, when a bearing pad suddenly detached from pillar no. 433 of the metro rail structure, fatally injuring Abul Kalam, a passerby.
Following the tragic incident, Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Adviser to the Ministry of Road Transport, Bridges, and Railways, announced that the family would receive Tk 5 lakh in compensation and that one family member would be offered a job at DMTCL.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Judge Court lawyer Enamul Haque Nabin has issued a legal notice to the Secretary/Senior Secretary of the Bridge Ministry and the Managing Director of DMTCL, demanding Tk 10 crore in compensation for the deceased’s family.
The notice, sent via post on Tuesday (October 28), instructs authorities to pay the compensation and confirm a permanent job for one of the victim’s family members within 30 days. Failure to comply will result in legal action, as stated in the notice. Legal experts stress the need for strict accountability and preventive measures to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
