Tears and Confusion in Mirpur’s Shialbari After Devastating Fire
On Tuesday, the Rupnagar area of Mirpur, Dhaka, was filled with tears and confusion as families desperately searched for their loved ones following a devastating fire at a chemical warehouse and an adjacent seven-storey garment factory.
A Husband’s Desperate Search
Among the anxious crowd was Mohammad Naim, holding a photo and ID card of his missing wife, Muna Akter Samia. The couple, married just a year ago, had recently started their new life in Rupnagar, working in garment factories. Samia left for work as usual on Tuesday morning but did not return.
“I came here as soon as I heard about the fire,” Naim told Stream. “But I haven’t found her yet.”

Since noon, Naim has been waiting near the site, hoping for any news about his wife. Beside him, Samia’s mother-in-law, Tahera Begum, broke down in tears, saying:
“We are poor people. We don’t have any power. Please find my daughter.”
Families Urged to Contact Hospital
Volunteers at the scene announced through loudspeakers that families of missing persons should contact Dhaka Medical College Hospital, as no further information would be provided at the fire site. When asked if he had visited the hospital, Naim replied:
“I’ve sent two others again, but they also came back with nothing.”
Fire Service Updates
According to Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, Director (Operations and Maintenance) of the Fire Service, 16 bodies have been recovered so far. The search and rescue operation is still underway to locate more victims.
