A massive fire broke out in the Shialbari area of Rupnagar in Mirpur, the capital, killing 16 people. The bodies of the deceased have been brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College (DMCH). However, their identities are yet to be known.

The bodies were brought
On Tuesday (October 14), firefighters recovered the bodies from the scene at around 8:30 pm and brought them to the emergency department of DMCH. Inspector in-charge of DMCH Hospital Police Camp Md. Faruk confirmed the matter. He said—
“A total of 16 bodies, including women and men, who died in the fire from Mirpur have been brought to the hospital. It will take some time to identify them.”
Origin and circumstances of the fire
The fire broke out at around 11:40 am on Tuesday. The fire broke out in a garment factory and chemical godown in the Shialbari area of Rupnagar in Mirpur. According to the Fire Service and Civil Defense, a total of 16 bodies have been recovered as of 7:15 pm on Tuesday. It is believed that they died of asphyxiation from toxic smoke and gas. In addition, several people were injured or burned, of whom 3 have been admitted to the National Burn Institute for treatment.

Firefighters operation
Upon receiving the news of the fire, the fire service units quickly reached the scene. More than 12 units are working to control the fire. Firefighters said that they had to enter the building and conduct rescue operations at great speed due to the presence of chemicals in the building and the heavy smoke.
The situation is still critical
Work is ongoing to rescue people trapped inside the building in the fire. The fire brigade is taking time to bring the fire under control due to the smoke and chemicals. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police and the hospital authorities are working to identify the bodies of the deceased.
