Election Will Take Place in February

In an interview with Indian Bengali daily Ei Samay, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir confirmed that the national election in Bangladesh will be held in February 2026. He rejected any doubts about chaos or violence.

Translation: “The election will be held in February next year. There is no doubt. There will be no unrest. People want their voting rights back, they want an election. It will be like a festival in February.”

Jamaat and NCP’s Demands

When asked about Jamaat-e-Islami’s demand for proportional representation and NCP’s demand for a constitutional assembly, Fakhrul dismissed both strongly.

Translation: “Jamaat will join the election. It will be held in the traditional way that people understand, not PR or TR. You will see Jamaat participate. And we no longer consider NCP a real force.”

Jamaat’s Seat Sharing Issue

Fakhrul admitted that Jamaat had asked BNP for seats but said BNP refused to give them much importance.

Translation: “They asked for 30 seats. We did not show interest. We proposed a much smaller number, which they did not like. I assure you, we will not allow Jamaat to dominate us anymore.”

Trust in Dr. Yunus and the Army

Fakhrul said the situation has changed, and now Dr. Muhammad Yunus is very serious about holding elections in February. He also mentioned his discussion with Yunus and the Army Chief.

Translation: “The situation has changed. On behalf of the party, I talked with him. I see that now he is very serious. He sincerely wants the election to happen in February.”

Mirza Fakhrul added that both Yunus and Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman want elections on time, so that the military can return to the barracks.

Awami League and Jatiya Party Must Join

Fakhrul made it clear that BNP wants Awami League and Jatiya Party to also take part in the polls.

Translation: “We said Awami League and their allies, even Jatiya Party, should join the election. Let there be a free and fair vote. For this, many are calling me an agent of India or a lackey of Awami League. But why should we repeat Sheikh Hasina’s wrongdoings?”

On India’s Role

Fakhrul acknowledged India’s importance but criticized how India supported only Awami League in the past.

Translation: “India was our partner in the Liberation War… The problem is that India’s rulers considered only Awami League as Bangladesh.”

He also rejected the idea that BNP and Jamaat have the same politics.

Translation: “They are only electoral allies. They do religious politics, but we do not.”

Call for Better Relations with India

Fakhrul finally said BNP wants normal relations with India and people-to-people contact, including culture, books, cinema, and easier visas.

Translation: “We want India to maintain contact with everyone… Let misunderstandings come to an end.”
