Fifty-nine UK Labour Party MPs have called for the immediate recognition of Palestine as an independent state, while also demanding urgent action to stop the ongoing “ethnic cleansing” campaign in Gaza.
According to a report published on Saturday in the influential British newspaper The Guardian, a letter calling for this was sent to British Foreign Secretary David Lammy last Thursday. An organization called Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East is behind this initiative.

The letter strongly criticized the Israeli Defense Minister’s plan to build a so-called “humanitarian city” in the ruins of the city of Rafah, calling the proposal to relocate all Gazans there “a forced displacement of people” and “a plan to erase the existence of the Palestinians,” a gross violation of human rights.
The MPs who signed the letter, representing both the centre and left wing of the Labour Party, stressed the importance of recognizing Palestine as a state, “The plan announced by the Israeli Defence Minister to detain all Palestinian citizens of Gaza in Rafah is a form of ethnic cleansing. It is a gross violation of human rights.”
