Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), has stated that neither the Home Affairs Adviser nor the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) can continue in their respective positions under the current circumstances.
He said the CEC cannot dismiss serious incidents as isolated events and must step down immediately. Otherwise, he warned, a free and fair election under the present Election Commission would be impossible.
He made these remarks on Monday afternoon, 15 December, while addressing an all-party resistance rally at the Central Shaheed Minar. The rally was organized to protest the attack on Inquilab Mancha spokesperson and Dhaka-8 independent candidate hopeful Sharif Osman Hadi and to demand exemplary punishment for the attackers. Nahid Islam said,
‘স্বরাষ্ট্র উপদেষ্টা নৈতিকভাবে এই দায়িত্বে থাকতে পারেন না। ৫ আগস্টের পর মামলা বাণিজ্য করা হয়েছে, আইনশৃঙ্খলা স্বাভাবিক হয়নি।হাদির ওপর হামলায় বাংলাদেশ আক্রান্ত হয়েছে। বাংলাদেশ এবং জুলাই বিপ্লবীরা ঐক্যবদ্ধ, সেই বার্তা দিতে আজকের এই সমাবেশ।’Translation: “The Home Affairs Adviser cannot morally remain in office. Since 5 August, case-trading has taken place and law and order has not returned to normal. The attack on Hadi is an attack on Bangladesh itself. Bangladesh and the July revolutionaries are united. Today’s gathering sends that message.”
Referring to Victory Day programs, Nahid criticized the role of intelligence agencies, saying,

‘গোয়েন্দা সংস্থাকে বিরোধি দল দমনে ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। তারা গুম-খুন করেছে দক্ষতার সাথে। কিন্তু এখন খুনীকে ধরতে পারে না। ডিপস্টেট নিয়ে কথা বলতে হবে। ৭১ সাল থেকে প্রতিরোধ শুরু হয়েছিলো, এখনও চলছে। কাল উৎসব করতে নয়, প্রতিরোধ যাত্রা করবো।’
Translation: “Intelligence agencies were used to suppress opposition parties. They carried out enforced disappearances and killings with efficiency, yet now they fail to arrest murderers. We must talk about the deep state. Resistance began in 1971 and it continues today. Tomorrow we will not celebrate. We will march in resistance.”
Bringing India into the context of the attack on Hadi, Nahid Islam said,
‘ভারত যদি মনে করে, আগের মতো হস্তক্ষেপ করবে, নির্বাচনে কারচুপি করবে। সেটি ভুল প্রমাণ করবো। ভারতের স্বাধীনতা সার্বভৌমত্ব বাংলাদেশের ওপর নির্ভরশীল। ভারতকে এটি মাথায় রাখতে হবে।’
Translation: “If India thinks it can interfere as before or manipulate elections, we will prove them wrong. India’s independence and sovereignty depend on Bangladesh. India must remember that.”
Issuing a warning, he further said,
‘ভারতের অখণ্ডতা ও সার্বভৌমত্ব বাংলাদেশের ওপর নির্ভরশীল। ভারতকে সাবধান থাকতে হবে। বাংলাদেশের সঙ্গে সম্মান ও মর্যাদার সম্পর্ক রাখতে হবে।’
Translation: “India’s territorial integrity and sovereignty depend on Bangladesh. India must remain cautious and maintain relations with Bangladesh based on respect and dignity.”
At the same rally, NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said,
‘শুধু হাদির প্রয়োজনে নয়, বাংলাদেশের প্রয়োজনে ঐক্যবদ্ধ হয়েছি। স্বাধীনতা সার্বভৌমত্বকে ভারতের দালালদের হাতে তুলে দেবো না। শেখ হাসিনাসহ গণহত্যায় জড়িত সব খুনিকে হস্তান্তর করতে হবে। আমাদের নিরাপত্তার ভয় দেখিয়ে লাভ নেই।’
Translation: “We are united not only for Hadi, but for Bangladesh itself. We will not hand over our independence and sovereignty to India’s collaborators. Sheikh Hasina and all those involved in genocide must be handed over. Threatening us with security concerns will not work.”
