Nazmoon Falgunee Moon : A journey from Brac University to Oxford University

Nazmoon Falgune Moon graduated from Brac University in 2021; she was from the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (MNS). Recently she completed her post-graduate degree from the University of Oxford with dissimilation. Her family pressured her to be a doctor; that’s why Moon began her higher studies as a medical student. But she was passionate about physics; for this reason, after two years, she joined BracU, which later turned into Mathematics.

At BracU, Moon reached out to Professor Syed Hasibul Hassan Chowdhury (Coordinator, Mathematics Program) and Professor Dr. Tibra Ali (Associate Dean, Research, School of Data Sciences). With their help, she took advanced-level mathematical courses, including category theory, differential geometry, general relativity, and several more courses. Those courses helped her to fall for mathematics and ultimately made her diminish the necessity in mathematics. Moon always felt that “mathematics is a beautiful subject that always explains the root of everything.” Throughout her undergraduate studies, she also worked on that category theory under the instructions of Professor Chowdhury. Her undergraduate thesis title was “ Categorical Aspects of Axiomatic 2D Topological Quantum Field Theories.” Moon’s unfathomable academic record gained her the renowned “ Optiver Foundation” scholarship, which was given for a postgraduate degree in Mathematics and Foundations of Computer Science from the University of Oxford, at Mansfield College. George Cantor, who is a famous mathematician, said in a brief that “ the spirit of mathematics lies in its freedom”.

Moon’s journey reflects the resilience that led her from being enrolled in medical school to chasing her true passion. Now, her story will continue for all young people as an inspiration for those who love physics and mathematics, especially those girls in STEM who are fighting to make their dreams come true. Now she is a research assistant to Professor Chowdhury at BracU. She is interested in the Quantum Foundation. She also gives advice for young people: “ Do the coursework properly and study a lot.”
