NCP’s Complaint Against Election Commission
The National Citizen Party (NCP) has accused the Election Commission (EC) of deliberately offering them “funny symbols” instead of their desired Shapla (water lily) symbol.
The complaint was made by the party’s Chief Coordinator Nasir Uddin Patwari on Tuesday (30 September) night during a press conference at their temporary central office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
“EC Acting with Bias”
Nasir Uddin Patwari said:
“ইসির কাছ থেকে নিবন্ধন সংক্রান্ত চিঠি আমরা পেয়েছি। সেখানে আমাদের জন্য আলমিরা, উটপাখি, কাপ-পিরিচ, থালাবাটি প্রতীক বরাদ্দ রাখা হয়েছে। এগুলো খুবই হাস্যকর। ইসি আমাদের সঙ্গে স্বেচ্ছাচারী ও বৈষম্যমূলক আচরণ করছে।”
Translation: We have received the registration letter from the EC. In it, symbols like almirah, ostrich, cup-saucer, and plate have been listed for us. These are very funny. The EC is acting arbitrarily and showing bias against us.
“১৫ লক্ষ কাস্টমার একুইজিশনের গোপন কৌশল পেয়ে যাচ্ছেন আপনার এক ক্লিকেই ”
He further added:
“আমরা আগেই জানিয়েছি— এনসিপির শাপলা প্রতীক পেতে কোনো আইনি বাধা নেই। ইসিরও অন্য কোনো চাপ অনুভব করার কথা নয়। গণঅভ্যুত্থানের পর আমরা স্বাধীন নির্বাচন কমিশনের দাবি তুলেছিলাম। কিন্তু বর্তমান কমিশন একদলীয় অফিসে পরিণত হয়েছে। তাদের কার্যক্রম সংবিধানকে প্রশ্নবিদ্ধ করছে।”
Translation: We have already said there is no legal barrier for NCP to get the Shapla symbol. The EC should not feel any external pressure. After the mass uprising, we demanded an independent commission, but this one has turned into a one-party office. Their activities are putting the Constitution into question.

Different Standards for Different Parties
The NCP leader alleged that while many political parties use national elements in their symbols, only their request for Shapla is being blocked.
He stated:
“এখন প্রশ্ন উঠতে পারে, প্রতীক না পেলে আমরা কী করব? জনগণকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে সাংবিধানিক ও গণতান্ত্রিক উপায়ে আমরা সংগ্রাম চালিয়ে যাব।”
Translation: Now the question may arise, what will we do if we don’t get the symbol? We will continue our struggle with the people in a constitutional and democratic way.
Suspicion Over New Party Registration
When asked by journalists, Nasir Uddin Patwari also questioned the registration process for a party called Jatiya League:
“জাতীয় লীগ’ নামে একটি দল নিবন্ধন পেতে যাচ্ছে। অথচ এ পর্যন্ত আমরা দলটির কোনো মিছিল, সভা বা সেমিনার দেখিনি। এসব কারণে ইসির প্রতি আমাদের সন্দেহ আরও ঘনীভূত হয়েছে।”
Translation: A party named Jatiya League is about to get registration, but so far we have not seen any rally, meeting, or seminar from them. For this reason, our doubt against the EC has only deepened.
He also demanded the cancellation of registrations given to political parties during the Awami League government’s tenure.

The press conference was also attended by NCP Joint Convener Khaled Saifullah and Joint Member Secretary Zahirul Islam Musa, among others.
