NCP Inspires Gen-Z Voters: Bold Proposals for Voting at 16 and Candidates at 23

NCP

The National Consensus Commission of the interim administration will receive the National Citizen Party’s (NCP) initial reform proposal tomorrow, Sunday. Under the plan, the voting age would be lowered to 16 years old, and the minimum age to run for office in the national parliament would be lowered to 23 years old.

The information was released by the party at a news conference held at its main office in Rupayan Tower, Banglamotor, Dhaka, on Saturday at approximately 11 AM. The information was provided by Sarwar Tushar, the Joint Convener of the NCP and Coordinator of the Reform Coordination Committee.

The NCP believes that the voting age can be set at 16. Sarwar Tushar stated that the reason behind this is that the current movement is being referred to as a Gen-Z uprising worldwide. In post-uprising Bangladesh and the upcoming election, the Gen-Z generation will not be able to voice their opinions simply because they are under 18, which the NCP finds illogical. Therefore, tomorrow, the NCP will propose allowing voting from the age of 16.

During the press conference, Sarwar Tushar mentioned that the Constitution Reform Commission proposed a minimum age of 21 to run for parliament. The NCP believes this is too low and suggests the age be 23 instead. Currently the minimum age to run for the national parliament is 25. The Constitution Reform Commission has proposed lowering it to 21 years for the interim government.

Sarwar Tushar also mentioned that tomorrow, Sunday, at 2 PM, the NCP delegation will submit their reform proposal to the National Consensus Commission’s office. He added that after that, there will be discussions between the NCP and the Consensus Commission. He said that the Consensus Commission has already started discussions with parties that have submitted reform proposals. If the NCP submits their proposal tomorrow, discussions about the NCP’s position with the Consensus Commission may take place after Eid.
