An NCP Leader Shot in public, raising fresh concerns about the safety of political activists.
The victim, Motaleb Shikdar, is the Khulna Divisional Head of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and a central organizer of NCP Sramik Shakti.
He was shot in the head and rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Confirmation from NCP Leader
The incident was confirmed on Monday (22 December) through a social media post by Dr. Mahmuda Mitu, Joint Chief Organizer of NCP. She wrote,
“এনসিপির খুলনা বিভাগীয় প্রধান এবং এনসিপি শ্রমিক শক্তির কেন্দ্রীয় সংগঠক ও মোতালেব শিকদার কে একটু আগে গুলি করা হয়েছে। আশঙ্কাজনক অবস্থায় খুলনা মেডিকেলে নেওয়া হয়েছে।”
Translation: “Motaleb Shikdar, the Khulna divisional head of NCP and central organizer of NCP Sramik Shakti, has been shot a short while ago. He has been taken to Khulna Medical in critical condition.”
Context: Recent Killing of Osman Hadi
The shooting comes shortly after the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a frontline fighter of the July mass uprising, spokesperson of Inkilab Mancha, and an independent candidate from Dhaka-8 constituency.
On 12 December, Osman Hadi was shot in the head by attackers on Box Culvert Road in Puranapaltan, Dhaka. He was first treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later at Evercare Hospital.
As his condition worsened, he was flown to Singapore on 15 December for advanced treatment. Despite all efforts, he died on 18 December while undergoing treatment.
Burial of Osman Hadi
After his death, Osman Hadi’s body was brought back to Bangladesh. He was buried near the central mosque of University of Dhaka, beside the grave of Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Growing Security Concerns
The latest shooting has intensified fears about the safety of July movement activists and political leaders, especially those associated with anti-fascist and anti-hegemony movements. No further details about the attackers or arrests were immediately available.
