Facebook Post Sparks Debate
On Tuesday, Sarjis Alam, the Chief Organizer of the National Citizen Party (NCP) for the northern region, posted on Facebook saying that the party’s election symbol must be the Shapla (Water Lily).
‘এনসিপির মার্কা শাপলাই হতে হবে, অন্য কনো অপশন নেই।’
Translation: “NCP’s symbol must be the Shapla, there is no other option.”
Election Commission’s Position
According to Sarjis Alam, the Election Commission Secretary said that since Shapla is not on the official list of symbols, the NCP cannot get it. However, Alam argued this was not a legal issue, but simply an administrative excuse.
‘ইলেকশন কমিশন সচিব বলেছেন মার্কার তালিকায় শাপলা নেই তাই এনসিপি শাপলা প্রতীক পাচ্ছে না। তারমানে কোনো আইনগত বাধা নয় বরং তালিকায় না থাকার কারণে তারা এনসিপিকে শাপলা প্রতীক দিতে পারছে না।’
Translation: “The Election Commission Secretary said Shapla is not on the list of symbols, so NCP cannot get it. This means it is not a legal barrier, but only because it is not on the list.”

Allegation of Bias Against Election Commission
Sarjis Alam criticized the Election Commission for ignoring NCP’s earlier request. He said the party clearly stated its choice of Shapla symbol when applying for registration.
‘যেদিন এনসিপি প্রথম নিবন্ধনের জন্য আবেদন করে সেদিনই স্পষ্ট ভাবে জানিয়ে দিয়েছিল এনসিপি শাপলা মার্কা চায়। তাহলে ওই তালিকায় শাপলা মার্কা যুক্ত করা কাদের কাজ ছিল? এতদিন কি তারা নির্বাচন কমিশনে বসে বসে নাটক দেখেছে? নাকি স্বাধীন প্রতিষ্ঠানে বসে অন্য কোনও প্রতিষ্ঠান, দল বা এজেন্সির কথামতো উঠবস করেছে?’
Translation: “The day NCP first applied for registration, it clearly stated it wanted the Shapla symbol. So whose job was it to add Shapla to the list? Have they been sitting in the Election Commission watching drama all this time? Or are they sitting in an independent institution but acting according to other parties or agencies?”
Warning Against Political Hypocrisy
Sarjis Alam also warned that NCP will politically resist all forms of dishonesty regarding the election process. He said the demand for Shapla is non-negotiable.
‘নির্বাচন কিভাবে হবে সেটাও দেখে নেওয়ার কথা জানিয়ে সারজিস আলম বলেন, সকল ধরনের ভন্ডামিকে রাজনৈতিকভাবে মোকাবেলা করা হবে। যেহেতু কোন আইনগত বাধা নেই তাই এনসিপির মার্কা শাপলাই হতে হবে। অন্য কোন অপশন নাই।’
Translation: “Regarding how the election will take place, Sarjis Alam said that all types of hypocrisy will be dealt with politically. Since there is no legal barrier, NCP’s symbol must be the Shapla. There is no other option.”
Ending his statement, Sarjis Alam gave a strong warning against unfair practices in politics.
‘নাহলে কোন নির্বাচন কিভাবে হয় আর কে কিভাবে ক্ষমতায় গিয়ে মধু খাওয়ার স্বপ্ন দেখে সেটা আমরাও দেখে নিব।’
Translation: “Otherwise, we too will watch how elections are held and who dreams of enjoying power after coming to office.”
