Nepal Launches Electricity Export to Bangladesh

Nepal has officially started exporting electricity to Bangladesh via India, following a tripartite agreement signed in October 2024. The export was inaugurated in a virtual ceremony attended by Indian Power Minister Manohar Lal and Bangladesh’s Power Adviser Md Shahidul Haque.

The decision to begin the electricity supply was made during former Nepalese Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s visit to India in mid-2023, aiming to boost regional energy cooperation. Under the agreement, Nepal will supply 40 MW of electricity to Bangladesh using India’s grid from June 15 to November 15 each year, starting in 2025.

The deal was formalized by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), and India’s NTPC Power Business Corporation.
