Violence and Attacks on Officials
Since the start of the protests, several ministerial and government officials’ residences have been set on fire. Many officials have been publicly harassed and physically attacked. These attacks are believed to be the main reason ministers and officials chose dramatic escape methods such as helicopters.
Origins of the Protests
The protests began after the Nepali government-imposed restrictions on social media. Young people, especially from the Gen-Z generation, took to the streets to voice their opposition.
The situation quickly escalated into violent clashes:
- On Tuesday, protesters engaged in arson and vandalism at government and private buildings across the capital.
- Amid the chaos, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned.
- To control the unrest, the army was deployed, a curfew was imposed, and citizens were instructed to stay indoors unless necessary.
Current Situation
The streets of Kathmandu remain tense as the army patrols the capital to maintain order. Helicopter evacuations have become necessary for officials fearing attacks from the demonstrators.
The situation reflects the rapid escalation of political unrest in Nepal, showing how youth-led protests can quickly turn violent when sparked by controversial government decisions.
