New Banknotes Ready for Release
As Eid ul Azha approaches and Bangladesh Bank is preparing to release new banknotes into circulation. This time, fresh 20, 50, and 1000 taka banknotes with updated designs will be introduced, marking a change from the previous Eid when no new notes were launched.
The printing of these new notes is already underway at the Security Printing Corporation in Gazipur. Unlike before, these notes will not feature Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s image. Instead, they will display graffiti from the July 1975 uprising and some older design elements, giving the currency a new look.
Bangladesh Bank’s Executive Director and spokesperson, Arif Hossain Khan, confirmed that the new banknotes will reach the banks before Eid ul Azha. Although the exact release dates remain undisclosed, all preparations are nearly complete.
According to a senior official, the 20-taka notes are nearly ready and will be handed over to the central bank soon, with the 50 and 1000 taka notes following shortly after. The bank will first distribute these notes to its main offices and branches before making them available to the public. A limited number of notes are expected to be released before the Eid holidays to meet growing demand.
Earlier this year, a controversy over the old banknotes with Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s portrait led to a halt in exchanging new notes. Since then, worn-out notes have increasingly circulated, adding to the need for fresh banknotes before Eid ul Azha. The arrival of these new banknotes will help ensure smooth transactions and provide fresh currency to the public during the festive season.
