Highlights:

MIDA Delegation Meets Chief Adviser
A delegation from the Maheshkhali Integrated Development Authority (MIDA) met with Chief Adviser Prof. Muhammad Yunus on Wednesday at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.
The delegation was led by MIDA Chairman Chowdhury Ashiq Mahmud Bin Harun and included members Commodore Tanzim Faruq and Md. Sarwar Alam, as well as the SDG Chief Coordinator Lamia Morshed and Secretary of the Chief Adviser’s Office, Md. Saifullah Panna.
Presentation on Maheshkhali-Matarbari Project
During the meeting, the MIDA chairman presented details of the Maheshkhali-Matarbari project and outlined MIDA’s action plan for the next four months.
Ashiq Chowdhury said:
“প্রকল্পটি তিন ধাপে সম্পন্ন হবে—প্রথম ধাপ ২০২৫ থেকে ২০৩০, দ্বিতীয় ধাপ ২০৩০ থেকে ২০৪৫, এবং তৃতীয় ধাপ ২০৪৫ থেকে ২০৫৫ পর্যন্ত। প্রকল্প বাস্তবায়ন হলে প্রায় ২৫ লাখ লোকের প্রত্যক্ষ ও পরোক্ষ কর্মসংস্থান হবে এবং জিডিপিতে দেড়শ বিলিয়ন মার্কিন ডলার যুক্ত হবে।”
Translation:
“The project will be completed in three phases—first phase from 2025 to 2030, second phase from 2030 to 2045, and third phase from 2045 to 2055. Once implemented, the project will create direct and indirect employment for around 2.5 million people and add $150 billion to GDP.”

Vision for a New City and Blue Economy
The Chief Adviser emphasized that the project is not just about building a deep-sea port, but also about creating a blue economy and establishing a new city in the area.
He said:
“শুধু গভীর সমুদ্র বন্দর নয়, আমাদের একটা ব্লু ইকনোমি গড়ে তোলার ভিশন নিয়ে কাজ করতে হবে। ওই এলাকা শুধু একটা ফ্যাসিলেটিং জোন হিসেবে না, বরং সেখানে একটা নতুন শহরের জন্ম হবে। সেখান থেকে আমাদের আন্তর্জাতিকভাবে কানেক্টিভিটি তৈরি হবে। সমুদ্রই হবে বিশ্বের পথে আমাদের মহাসড়ক।”
Translation:
“Not just a deep-sea port, we need to work with a vision to build a blue economy. That area will not just be a facilitating zone, but a new city will be born there. From there, we will create international connectivity. The sea will be our highway to the world.”
Focus on Research and Training
Prof. Yunus highlighted the importance of research on deep-sea development and establishing an international standard training facility in Maheshkhali.
He said:
“আমরা সমুদ্র জগতে কখনো প্রবেশ করিনি। ওটা নিয়ে চিন্তাও করিনি। এ বিষয়ে গবেষণা, ফাইন্ডিংস নেই। এর সম্পর্কিত কী কী গবেষণা আছে, অন্য দেশের গবেষণাপত্র যেটা আমাদের সাথেও মিলবে ভালো সেগুলো খুঁজে বের করতে হবে এবং নিজস্ব গবেষণা করতে হবে। এজন্য প্রতিষ্ঠান দরকার। একাডেমিয়া গড়ে তুলতে হবে, ওশান ইকনোমি নিয়ে ইন্টারন্যাশনাল কনফারেন্স আয়োজন করতে হবে।”
Translation:
“We have never entered the world of the sea. We have not thought about it either. There are no research or findings on this. We need to identify relevant studies, including international research papers that can be useful, and conduct our own research. For this, institutions are needed. We must build an academy and organize international conferences on the ocean economy.”
Emphasis on Environment and Eco-Tourism
Environmental conservation was another key point during the meeting. The team discussed establishing an eco-tourism park and the Chief Adviser stressed planning for future forest management.
He said:
“সেখানকার বনভূমি এখন কী অবস্থায় আছে, ভবিষ্যতে আমরা বনভূমিগুলোকে কী অবস্থায় দেখতে চাই সেই পরিকল্পনাও করতে হবে।”
Translation:
“We need to plan how the forest areas are currently and how we want to see them in the future.”
